National Poetry Month--Caught by Surprise

I've been so busy with plants, chckens, pigs, and the upcoming ballad workshop that poetry month snuck up on me.

I'm glad that we have a month set aside to recognize the importance of poetry in our lives. It would be even better if poetry was so much a part of our lives that we didn't need a month to honor it. What if poems were printed on the cereal box, in a corner of the front page of the paper, posted on bulletin boards in office lobbies? Would we slow down, read the words and soak in their meaning? would we go about our work with a different perspective?

There are so many poetry sites it's difficult to narrow down to just a few. The list below focuses on West Virginia poets and poetry:

West Virginia Poetry Society for news, information, contests, conversation and poems

Verse Daily: for your daily dose of poetry

Poets.org has a page of West Virginia poets and links

West Virginia Poetry news, podcasts, YouTube and more

One more that is not West Virginia, but a challenge to all poets: write a poem a day!
Read Robert Brewer's challenge.

*Vic Burkhammer's comment on this post made me realize that I missed listing his marvelous site completely when I first posted this. Don't miss MountainWord for wide and interesting coverage of poetry and poetry topics. Sorry, Vic!

...I had a lot of typos to correct too. Geez. Where was my brain this morning?

  1. Thank you, Granny Sue, for mentioning thegazz.com/gblogs/mountainword

That's MountainWord, my blog at thegazz.com.

I check out your blog every once in a while. I'll try to give your April 26 workshop on poetry some attention, when I get a chance.

    All best,
    Vic Burkhammer
