Cleaning Out and a Random Question

After Christmas it seems that I get in the clean-out mode. Sunday afternoon I pulled this box of stuff together from various corners of the house--it's all headed to Goodwill or maybe to the cool place we found Saturday in Elizabeth (Hope's Closet, I think it's called). But not the scarf! That was made for me by a good friend and it's something I treasure.

But the rest? Out of here. I needed the space for things I actually use--which does not define this bunch. Two bags have been added to the pile, and there's a stack of clothes ready to go too. I feel lighter already. (And don't worry--I'm pretty sure you don't need any of this stuff either!)

Just for randomness:

Here we have two can openers. The top one is probably at least 30 years old. The handles are covered with plastic grips which doesn't make them particularly comfortable, and all the other parts are metal.

The lower can opener is brand new, bought in mid-December. The handles are cushioned and soft, it has a nifty latch and smooth operation. A lot of its parts are plastic.

Now the question: Which one do you think works?

Gee, how did you guess?!

  1. Granny Sue your box of stuff looks interesting, are you sure there's nothing in there we would want? And I would say the old can opener is the one that works, why else would you have had it all these years.

  2. The old one must work, and I have had so much trouble buying a new one that works, that I ended up buying something I said I would never own---an electric can opener. It's mounted under the upper cabinet because I just don't need one more thing taking up counter top space. And it's okay, but I'd sure like to have one like your old one!!!!

  3. I'm with Janet on this, it's the old can opener that works. Mine has to be that old too. I have about half of the things on your guess what it is photo! Alot of the things I have were my grandmother's and that's accounts for their age. I use them all the time.
I put all my "stuff" on Freecycle and it's gone in no time.

  4. Freecycle is a good idea, Cathy. BW, I had an electric can opener too. The old one with red handles I just bought at a consignment store, i have not owned it that long. I wanted to get rid of the electric can opener--why pay money for something that just takes a little muscle, was my thinking. So I bought a new one, the one in the photo. After 10 uses, it's stripped out. So when I saw this old one, I thought why not give it a try? it was only 1.00 and so far works like a champ. I've had one like it in the past. Why did I get rid of it? Someone gave me an electric one when we got electricity in 1989!

  5. Sue - I had a white handled one just like that which I had for probably 25 years and and I literally wore it out. Ergo, the reason I have about 3 new ones in the drawer--none of which work--and last resort was electric. If I could find one of those in a junk shop, I'd snatch it up, too!!!! That is what you call a GREAT FIND!!!!

  6. LOL - We went through THREE of those new can openers before we went and found an old one in the thrift shop that worked. None of the new ones actually opened cans in any sane manner.

  7. Gee, do I recognize that scarf? I'm glad it's held up over the seasons. I'm onto knitting mittens and socks these days. Way cool sock yarns out there. Batsy

  8. Yes, you do, Batsy! It's still in perfect shape. I've had to protect it against a few granddaughters who would have liked to claim it though.

Have you visited Celtic Memory Yarns' blog? She is in Ireland and knits the coolest socks, even has some antique sock-knitting machines. I'm not a knitter, but I love her site for the photos and the wildly creative projects she takes on. She spins too.
