There Are Bare Nekkid Ladies in My Garden

...and aren't they beautiful?

I love these lilies that are also known as Magic Lilies, Surprise Lilies and probably several other names.

The leaves come up thick in the Spring, then die away. At the end of July, bare stalks emerge from the ground overnight, and are in full bloom in a day or so. It is pure magic.

This year's lilies are the most beautiful they have ever been. They are over two feet tall and full of blooms, creating a froth of pink at the edge of the garden. I planted these years ago (at least 10 and probably more like 15 years back) and ground moles almost did them in a few years ago. The attack seems to have strengthened them and the bulbs are evidently multiplying in the dark under ground. To my great joy.

  3. Wow your naked ladies are pretty. I have one or two but they don't seem as happy as yours.

  4. Mine have been in place a long time, Tipper, so maybe that's why? Their location is shaded most of the day.

A few somehow made it to the other side of the sidewalk, and I know I didn't plant them there. I've wondered if the moles carted them over and planted them. They are not as full as the ones in the picture, but they are getting better each year. Only problem is they are kinda in the middle of a peony plant...well, none of my gardens are perfection, and if they're happy there, I'm fine with it. Maybe they want the peony leaves for cover?

  5. Absolutely gorgeous. I am curious though...where did they come up with that name?

  6. I think the name developed because of the bare stems with beautiful pink flowers on top--and they're just so graceful.

  7. I have learned that they are called "Fairy Wands" lilies, as well. They are simply lovely! Thanks for sharing, and I will try and locate some for this forsaken garden of mine..
I saw that we were both posting on the "first 50 words"...love that place!!

  8. Hey Margaret,

I've been a first50 poster for a year or maybe longer, I think. I saw your pieces on there--nice! It's a good place to do some fast writing that may later develop into something longer/better.

I like the name fairy wands MUCH better (although my husband i'm sure prefers the neaked ladies in his garden).

  9. Your Naked Ladies look beautiful. They are one of the few flowers that I have that the deer do not eat so I always get to enjoy mine. I think Al is finally going to put up the electric fences. He has decided this will be the last year that the deer will use our yard as a salad bar. It's been fun seeing the fawns in our backyard with their mothers but I get angry when they are on our porch eating the few tomatoes we put out.

  10. I understand. There comes a point where the deer just aren't playing fair. I hope your fence works.

  12. They're gorgeous and so innocent looking. I had a laugh thinking about how many people must have clicked on your blog with a post name like that!

  13. Thank you, Janet--I bet they'd do well in your garden too.

Jai, I'm surprised I didn't get all sorts of weird comments. Maybe the spelling of naked threw them off!

  14. They probably skulked off after reading your post, embarassed at their pervy thoughts. Sure I'm speculating but it's possible, almost probable.
