Last Few Years at this Time

Gardens were being planted...
Green was slowly emerging

Crocus was in bloom...

And many orbs were floating at the State Capitol. Weird.
We're a little shy of accomplishing green or gardens this year, but the forecast is for sun and relative warmth this weekend, so we'll see. Maybe some lettuce will get in the ground after all. Last year? We planted the lettuce bed on February 12.

  1. Some people who ate lettuce growing in a backyard got very sick from ingesting tiny slug larvae in Hawaii. Two of them went into a month long coma. Remember to wash the lettuce thoroughly.

  2. We're looking at warm temps this weekend too. And I'm hoping to get my garden tilled up and ready for planting.
    And gigihawaii's tip...YUCK!
Thanks, I'll definitely be SCRUBBING that lettuce.

  3. Dang, gigi! Nothing sounds tastier than lettuce ala slug larvae. We do wash it carefully because leaf lettuce tends to get a lot of ground splash. But I never thought of slug larvae...wonder if it's just an island thing?

Becky, I'm picking up the lettuce seeds and onion sets today and Larry will be burning the lettuce bed so if it dries enough we'll have those seeds in the ground. Still need to start my tomatoes and other stuff tho--another weekend job.

  4. Wow, What a difference a year can make. This winter has been so snowy. Not a whole lot of green yet in our neck of the woods but there sure is a whole lot of mud. We're all anxiously waiting for the sun to come out and warm things up a bit. The garden is way to wet to get into yet but I'm sure I'll find something to get into outdoors this weekend. (Like washing 2 very dirty vehicles.)

  5. Hey Granny Sue!

It is so wet here where I live in Hurricane that I don't know when my husband will be able to plow up the garden. I was at the Half Way Market in Milton and Teays Valley this week and I bought some seeds. I also found out it was time to plant the onion sets. I might try to put some in flower pots this weekend. Have you ever done that? I'm just worried that since it is so wet and they are saying it is going to be a record breaking wet Spring that nothing will grow very well because of it!

  6. Hey, for once that's what it looks like out here, instead of still being covered with snow like the past 2 years. Bonfires and biking for this weekend. Batsy

  7. Angela, it is time to get those onions out. I've never tried them in pots but I can't see why it wouldn't work. Lettuce does great that way--you could plant it in a washtub and have tons of it to use.

Being on the ridge, our soil dries fast and if Larry gets the bed burned it will dry even faster. So we're kinda partial to wet weather because our gardens do extra well usually when it's rainy.

Bonfire sounds like a good idea, Batsy. We haven't had one for a while. Maybe it's time. You guys were due for a break after last year's snow.

  8. We've still got to get rid of some snow here in Summers county. BUT, where the snow is gone beneath the cherry and dogwood trees, the daffodils have come up almost an inch - from nothing! I can hardly wait to get to the old homesite by the log barn to see how the summer snowflakes are doing.
