West Virginia Children's Book Awards

Just announced by the West Virginia Library Commission! If you have young readers, these titles might appeal to them because these are books chosen by children as their favorite reads of the past year.

From the news release:

W.Va. Children's Choice Book Award 2009-2010 announced

1. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kenny won by a landslide! This first book in the popular series was the hands down favorite all over the state. The hilarious story of Greg’s struggles to survive middle school is highlighted by hand drawn illustrations of his trials and tribulations.

Kenny, Jeff. Diary of a Wimpy Kid. New York: Scholastic, 2007.

2. The beautifully illustrated story, Beowulf: A Hero’s Tale, retold by James Rumford, was a strong second place finisher. The text and illustrations combine to create an exciting tale of monsters and heroes. In the afterword, the author notes that only words existing during the Anglo-Saxon era were used in the text.

Rumford, James. Beowulf: A Hero’s Tale Retold. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2007.

3. A familiar name to West Virginia readers takes third place. Anna Egan Smucker has written a picture book for all ages with Golden Delicious: A Cinderella Apple Story based on the discovery of West Virginia’s most famous apple.

Smucker, Anna Egan. Golden Delicious: A Cinderella Apple Story. Morton Grove, IL: Albert Whitman & Co., 2008.
