Hearts Alive

It was a cold, blustery, sometimes-raining, sometimes snowing kind of weekend, but that did not disturb my plans at all. I gathered up my craft stuff and got ready for fun this weekend.

My daughter-in-law Amy and I had a great time playing with paper, eating strawberries with chocolate wine and keeping warm by the fire. In the end, we had some beautiful valentines.

We made a mess, of course:

but it was fun to see what we could come up with:

I looked online and found many Victorian valentine images that we could copy and cut out to use on our cards, like these:

And since some people like colors other than red, pink and purple, we ventured into other shades too:

But mostly stuck with the traditional colors:

It has been years since I made valentines--since I did programs with children at my library, in fact, and I had forgotten how much fun it could be. I had plenty of supplies on hand: scrapbooking scissors I bought several years ago and never used; construction paper and cardstock; markers and pens; doublestick tape and glue; stick-on plastic jewels and sequins; foam letters and even some foam hearts. I bought more foam hearts, some paper doilies and that was all we needed to make our cards. I ended up with about 20 cards-so far.

The supplies are still on the table, and I just might make a few more before I put them away. It's addictive!

  1. What a great way to spend the weekend. Valentine's Day is much more all-encompassing in the US and a much more important event than in the UK. Here it entirely commercialized and is purely for boyfriends/girlfriends and husbands/wives. No-one sends them to friends or family, it's a nice idea because here those who have no partner can feel very left out.

  2. Looks like you and DIL had a wonderful time making valentines. I haven't done that in years. I'm gonna go dig out my craft supplies and make some myself. Hope you have a wonderful week! Lots of Hugs!

  3. I try to make them every year for the grandkids. One year I made them and then bought some for the boys...I got in trouble. They really like their mom's corny cards. Mine aren't as fancy as yours though, very pretty!

  4. Rowan, it is very commercialized here, with decorations, lights, toys, etc. I'm not much into all that, and I haven't done cards for a long time for anyone by my hubby. I completely enjoyed it!

Mamabug, if you make some be sure to show us how they come out!

Theresa, I bet yours are neat. I didn't do any rhymes, etc, but thought that next year I might go looking for some poems to include--or even write some :)

  5. Granny-Sue -- what a great idea. I used to make Christmas tree decorations with my kids when they were small. Haven't done any creative things since. Maybe next year I'll find time to make my grandkids valentines. Your valentines are delightful -- barbara

  6. I'd highly recommend getting together with a friend to do it if you can, Barbara--it's so much fun. I had invited a few others who could not come because of illness and work, but it would have been neat to do it with a group, I think. There's time to talk bounce creative ideas around, and if everyone brings a few things to use, all the better.

  7. Your Valentine's are beautiful and it sounds like a wonderful way to spend the weekend. The kids and I worked on making butterflies out of construction paper hearts the other day. They always enjoy a break from school work to do an art project.

  8. That's a neat idea, Jessica. And I bet you enjoy the break as much as they do :) I know I would.
