Random Thoughts

It's a rainy, cold Friday evening. I've watched a British spy movie with Larry (excellent, called The Heat of the Day), petted the dogs and the cats, enjoyed the fire, updated my poetry blog...and now it's almost 10pm and I'm thinking about what to write.

For those who don't blog, this probably sounds like nothing special. For bloggers, though, it becomes an obsession. We have readers, real or imagined, who will be there to read our words, so we think about witty, insightful, informational or just plain funny things to write about. Then we consider whether we have photos or links for those topics. And if they're interesting. And if we really know what we're talking about.

Tonight I have several things on my mind. A grandson contemplating joining the National Guard. A nephew thinking about leaving teaching. A nephew in Iraq. A niece fighting a child support battle. A granddaughter attending nightly revivals.  A nephew moving away in hopes of a new start. Another nephew moving up his wedding date. Then there is the battle in Congress over the budget, West Virginia's new Democratic senator who sounds more Republican every day, the invitations to rallies for unions, the conflict between coal and renewable resources that is getting louder every day in this coal-producing state.

Of course the weather and the gardens are also on our minds. Today I bought onion sets and really want to get them planted--but this morning we were covered with snow and the gardens are way too wet for planting. So we cool our heels, frustrated. At least the marigolds and cabbages are sprouting in the house in their little mini-greenhouses.

The dogs and cats are on my mind too. Tonight everyone one is piled up by the fireplace--two black Labs, one orange cat and one tabby. Who could deny them on such a miserable night? They wind around our legs, wanting to be petted, to be noticed.

So I waffle between one topic and another; and then, looking at all the things I could write about, I opt instead for this: to be involved and aware, to know the family's doings and the political upheavals, to enjoy the pets' enjoyment of the fire--being connected is really why we are here, isn't it?

Connectivity is why I write this blog in the first place. Communicating from my remote place in the hills to all of you--that's really what blogging is about.

  2. I'm with joy - a good visit. And I know what you mean - thinking about my blog, what to write, something interesting, insightful, funny - whatever. At the end of it though, we just have to share about ourselves. That seems to always be enough.

  3. It is just like a visit, isn't it? We sit back with our coffee or tea and catch up with our friends. In the old days they wrote letters and to me this is like letter-writing but so much better.
