Winter Green, Winter White

I changed the red and green table to a winter green and white:

I really like this pale green Depression glass plate with the snowflake in the center:

My "winter green" table was done just in time:

This morning the snow is flying for the first time this year. Old weather lore says that the date of the first significant snowfall is the number we will have this winter. If the old-timers are correct, then we'll only have two snows all winter? That seems unrealistic to me, but we'll see.

Last January at this time, here is what we saw:

And this past weekend, this is what was going on:

Yes, those are honeybees, evidently after the sugar in the corn in the bird feeder. The bees were making the most of the warm weather! I hope they got snugged back in because the outlook certainly changed overnight.

It's a good day to be inside by the fire, but we may have some outside work to do. So the day's marching orders may be bundle up and work hard to stay warm.

For now, though, I have my coffee and a good book and the fire is quite inviting. I'm working on programs for this summer, searching for sun and moon and star stories.Warm work for a cold day.

  1. Loved your photo journal! Similar wintry scene here! I woke up to snow falling, the house begging for heat, and no coffee in the house! Last night's Ribfest had punch and eggnog, so the lack of coffe this morning caught me unprepared. Hoping the snow had not made the roads icy, I slipped on my togs and went to a country store nearby. Thankfully, I found the county road had been treated, so the driving up and down the steep hill was slow but safe enough. It wasn't until I stepped out of the car at the store's parking lot that I saw how slippery it really was! I made it home safely and cozied up to the fireplace with my coffee while the others in the house slept in, resting up for a hectic work week.

  2. Oh my! Morning and no coffee! I keep an "emergency" stash that Larry doesn't know about for just such times :) I drink tea in the morning, and coffee later so I am not as bothered by a lack of coffee, but he'd go nuts.

The ribfest sounds like fun. Heading to your blog to see if you've posted about it yet.

  4. It is snowing in KY too. I'll settle for two snow falls as long as we get lots of rain. Don't want a droughty summer. Another blogger mentioned bees seeking food during these warm days. He fed them some type of bee pollen that he bought. They loved it. I never see honeybees around my place. Stay warm by your fireplace -- barbara

  7. Jenny, the green and white is a nice change after the warm red and hunter green :) My flowers are sprouting too, and I hate that because the ends of the leaves will be all tattery now.

We put out some sugar water for ours, Barb, and they seemed to like it pretty well. Bees will come out if the temperatures are warm enough, to get water and any food they can find. I was happy to see ours, since it means that so far so good as far as wintering over. The next few months are the toughest for them though.

  8. You are so right, Jim! It's been a wild and blustery afternoon with some heavy snow showers. A good day to stay inside.

Now how did you guess I found that tablecloth while junking, Diane? :) That and everything else on the table too! I hope you had a great New Year's, too--ours was just exactly right and I hope the rest of the year stays the same.

  9. Green and white are lovely fresh colours for January, there are unseasonal happenings here too, I have snowdrops, a hellebore and a primula flowering already and \i heard one or two insects buzzing around last week. I suspect they may be wishing they'd stayed asleep before long:)
