John C. Campbell Folk School: May Day Celebration

It was May Day Festival at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC while we were visiting, and I was so glad to have been able to see it firsthand.

Here the Maypole stands ready for the festivities to begin.

Chatter, Tipper's daughter, came with Tipper and me to the festival. She was wearing a sweater crocheted by her grandmother and just looked so stunning.

Here come the dancers and the band!

And around and around they go!

Weaving the spiderweb:

Even young children could take part.

The Flower Dancers begin their routine:

Flowers were everywhere, it seemed:

Tipper and Chitter head back to the car after the dancing. Tipper is wearing another example of her mother's work.

The Green Man was in attendance, too:

I m not sure of the significance of this bird to the celebration. Perhaps it's winter, taking flight? Do any of you readers know? It was an impressive sight.

  2. These are some beautiful photos from this celebration. Are those Border Morris Dancers I see in the photo?

  3. Lovely pictures. There are very few villages in England that keep up the tradition of Maypole dancing these days.

  4. Friendliest Green Man I've ever seen. Great report, thank you. And hope you find out the significance of the crane. Or stork?
