Hail

49°f/9.4°C, clouds to the west, clear in the east.

This morning's window view

We had more rain yesterday evening, another crashing thunderstorm with lightning and hail. Ths is the 4th time in 2 weeks we've had hail. Fortunately for us it hasn't been the damaging kind, but other areas close by haven't been so lucky. My son lives just 30 minutes from us, but more like 10 as the crow flies, and his ground was completely covered.

Now, hail is a very rare occurrence usually. We might have a bit in mid-summer when a storm breaks excessive heat. But that's it. So four times already? That's a lot. More storms are possible this afternoon. More hail? We shall see.

Not much going on here. Larry changed the oil in the van yesterday, so yay for that. And yay that he is still able to do it. How much longer, I wonder, before we have to have someone else do that task? I think about things like this a lot these days.

As I was planting yesterday, yanking weeds and moving rocks and heavy flowerpots, I wondered how long I would be able to do this work. 5 years? 10? 3? And when I have to start giving it up, what then? Let my gardens go, after all this effort to create them? Hiring someone for such work would be out of the question,  and besides, where would I find someone who knew what plant was what anyway? It's a puzzle that only time will answer.

Meanwhile, I will be back at it today, finishing up the herb garden I hope, and transplanting some things in the flowerbeds. The veggie garden is on hold because it is impossible to get the soil ready when it is so wet. It will be a late garden indeed this year. I may seed some cucumbers and squash in pots though, to get a bit of a start on them. But beans, corn, and peppers will have to wait.

  1. Four hail storms already is definitely noticeable. These days our weather is always full of surprises, not necessarily good ones.

  6. I don't recall experiencing hail here in NH and this is our 4th spring.
We have rain in the forecast all week and it should be great for pulling those dandelions and other weeds if I didn't mind getting wet and chilled. It's not a warm rain. I thought we were done with the woodstove for the season but it helps take the chill from the air. We have our heat off I hope for the season.

  7. Teeny weeny hailstones are not much trouble, it's those darn golfball sized ones that cause so much damage. You are lucky being able to work in your garden, keep doing it for as long as you can.

  8. Your thoughts re how long we can keep up our gardening and outside work really echo my own. Husband Jim does all the mowing and the heavy work of the garden, I'm still puttering with my flowers though hands and knees work isn't going to happen from here out. Its disheartening to think about! My motto has become 'do as much as I can for as long as I can!'
We've not had hail but way too much rain has delayed germination of seeds, postponed setting out tomatoes, peppers and the cucumbers started in pots. Looks like late garden here as well.

  9. You are pretty vigorous and capable still. Me, not so much.

  10. I'm at that stage of life now when I can't keep up the extensive flower beds I've made. Volunteer plants are everywhere and spreading faster than I ( or my occasional helpers) can stop.

I hope you can get some rhubarb going in your garden. We don't have a sunny enough spot for ours so it doesn't do that well. I make rhubarb jam also that Impossible pie that I made recently.

  11. Hope the weather will calm down soon. We had some nice warm days last week, back to 6C degrees since Sunday.. April and early May are like that...unstable.

  13. Hail can be very destructive, as I am sure you know.
