Where in the World is Tikrit, Iraq?

Click on the map for an enlarged view

It's the birthplace of Saddam Hussein, north of Baghdad and along the historic and ancient Tigris River--the cradle of civilization, or so I was taught in school.

Now my son is there, in a country that seems more concerned with destruction than history.

So here, somewhere, is where he is living and working. At least it helps to know where in this world he is.

It seems like a very long way away.

  1. Tikrit is a long way Granny. When I try to put myself in your shoes it feels very difficult. My feelings about this war would make it especially hard. I honor your son's courage and your strength.
My son is 24 and I get exasperated with him but I am so grateful he is home.
Your poem touched me. What a wonderful way you have with words.

I enjoyed reading about your Thursday very much.

I must learn how to do this blogging.

  2. Well, it may make it a lil easier just knowing, I suppose. Every day there is one closer to being home.

  3. As I have mentioned before, my daughter is at Parris Island S.C. in training to become a Marine. What I found to help me understand where she is located is satelite pictures. Through our letters and maps that I drew for her, she helped me pinpoint exactly which building she is in. Of course the pictures are several years old, but it was fun and the kids just loved being able to see where their aunt was from the sky.
There are several places on the net you can go to. The best ones I have found, you can overlay the pictures with labeled maps to show you exactly where you are.

  4. It took me awhile to finally locate Tikrit, but I did. The other night I was skipping through old photos on your old PC and I came across Derek's homecoming picture from 4 years ago. Jared was much shorter than his daddy. Hannah looked like a baby and Haley still had that little girl look about her. As a tear rolled down my face, I wished at that moment that I was looking at next years homecoming pictures. And at that moment I wondered what the kids would look like then. Obviously Jared will be towering over Derrek, Hannah will look like a little girl and Haley will have begun getting her feminine figure. I can't wait to see those pics.
