Wild Kitties

My daughter-in-law Jaime caught two wild kittens on the side of the road and brought them to me because I had said I wanted a cat.

She brought them on Labor Day. The cats immediately disappeared into the woods and we didn't see them for 2 weeks. Then one reappeared. A week or so later, the other was sighted.

Now they're coming in closer, occasionally sitting out near the patio when we have the firepit lit. They still don't let us come within 10 feet of them, but they aren't running every time they see us.

The problem: one is male, the other female. We obviously need to catch them and get them fixed. We don't own a live trap.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can catch these kitties and get them to vet before we have many many wild kitties?

  1. Hey Sis,
I went to our local shelter, they were able to put me in contact with a feline rescue league in our area. They let me borrow a live trap for several feral cats.
    Hope this helps.
    Love to all,
    Julie

PS Sorry to hear about Baxter, he will be missed.

  2. I wish I had an answer for you. Maybe if you got in touch with a trapper you could borrow a live trap from him, or he would set one up for you.

  3. Maybe your vet or local shelter has a trap you could use.

  4. Live trap, why would you need a live trap? These are the cats that have tasted my blood... Probably still have my skin under their fingernails.

    Live trap indeed...

Just kidding! We will figure out something before they get to a courtin' age.

Hope your field mice population drops as low as ours has. Moles are nearly extinct here. 'Xcept for in the flower bed. Jaime always finds a new one in some form of disrepair. Kinda creepy unless you are into rodent forensics.

  5. I caught a mother cat and her kittens one time by using a large cat carrier that I had...I baited it with fishy canned food way at the back of the cage, and left the door open. I had the cage facing my door. Floss was tied on the cage door, ran through the side of the cage, and up through my door. When I saw all the cats inside, I pulled the floss tight and walked out and shut the door.
