Looking Ahead to May

Photos from last year's gardens:

grapes just setting on...
roses and lamb's ears...

tomatoes in bloom...
gardens burgeoning...
hills alive with sun and green...
iris and weigela scenting the air
and clematis sweetly climbing...
herb garden overflowing...
It will be here sooner than we think. And we'll be weeding, mowing, cutting, staking, planting so busily that we'll have to make time to look around and enjoy it all.

  1. Lovely garden! Since I don't like bees, I decided not to plant flowers next to our porch. I planted crotons, instead. Crotons have colorful leaves that look like perpetual autumn.

  2. Crotons are beautiful, gigi. They look like flowers with all their colors. In Hawaii, I can imagine that flowers are everywhere. Is that the case?

  3. Beautiful! I can't wait myself. Everything is beginning to look green but the color of flowers is well.. lacking. My bridal wreath started opening those buds.

  4. I laughed when I looked at these photos compared to the last post. What a change! All were taken in May too.

  5. Just what we all need Granny Sue! For Spring to arrive and stay awhile! Spring sure does look prettier at your house than mine. I did see my first butterfly of the year Monday when I came home! It won't be much longer! I hope....

  6. Sue, your garden is super, mine not so much. I have to do mine in strawbales and raised beds as there is mostly red clay & rock on our hill side. Have one red tulip blooming and that is special, the deer haven't found it yet.
I've ordered your Ghost stories CD and can hardly wait to get it.
    Spring is in the air!

  7. No butterflies for me yet, Angela, but the robins finally came, about a month later than last year. That might be a good thing--if everything holds off, the fruit blossoms won't get frosted.

Brighid, thank you for your order! I hope the tulip stays protected.

  10. I could actuakly smell that iris,Sue. I enjoyed your photos. We are still waiting for the first robin, in southern Iowa although I am sure they were here last year, this time.

I have that same watering can! in your last photo. With the price on the handle "$1.79" in grease pencil. Obviously, it hadn't been used much and I'm keeping it indoors.

Does anyone else remember the "grease pencil"?

  11. I do! Larry likes them for brick work but they're hard to find now.

1.79--that would be a great buy today, wouldn't it?

  12. What beautiful photographs! May is one of my favourite months though it was hard for my parents (their wedding anniversary became the day my brother died, when I was little). Now to me it's just for Aedammair's birthday.

I'm glad to see the storytelling schedule in the sidebar! We'll be making travel plans soon so I'll keep an eye on it.

  13. If I find any grease pencils at our local, small-town stores, I'll send Larry a half dozen. Or does he just need the "grease" cartriges. Weren't those things refillable?

  15. I'm anxious to take pics like that in my yard again. But, I will then be complaining about the weeding that needs to be done. Beautiful flowers!

  16. Thanks, Brighid and Nance! He's be surprised to get some of those--and maybe he'll leave my sharpies alone ;-)

  17. I think we can enjoy our gardens better in winter with pictures than we can at the time everything is in bloom, Janet! We're so busy then. But there is also porch time, and swing time, and that's the times I love to just look and enjoy. And see things I still need to do...

  18. Thanks for the touch of spring. It's coming . . .

  19. And I can't wait!
I've had the spring hope knocked outta me, but it is slowly coming back.
