Poem for Today: Hanging on a Memory, an Apron

Ruffles, pink and white
around the edges of fabric worn
by hands rubbed clean
and pockets

for handkerchiefs
and bits of things
like one sprig of lavender
tattered

from crushing fingers
that release the scent
of her, my cushion-soft
English granny

  1. Oh this brings memories of my grandmother. She would be 101 if she were still here with us. I kept her frilly aprons and still use them to this day. Her hankies are tucked away in my cedar chest.
When I see or think of those things I can smell her perfume and feel her giving me that BIG hug that she always gave us kids.

  2. I think I would have liked your grandmother, Jessica. Mine was such a little Englishwoman, so proper but so loving. I'm glad to have been able to prompt your memories of yours.
