Cupboard Cleaning

A couple weeks back I re-organized my big pantry cabinet in the kitchen. It certainly makes a difference to cooking. I wish I'd taken a before photo, but believe me it was a mess. I couldn't find anything and had to take stuff out every time I wanted a particular spice, bowl, or anything else that was stored in there. That kind of thing makes me crazy; I detest having to look for things when they are not in their assigned place, and there were no assigned places in this cupboard so that made it even worse.

Maybe it's the librarian in me; everything in correct order on the shelves. The order may be invisible to anyone else but I know what is where now--at least in this cabinet.

  1. Like you, I can just manage so much better when things are in order. Love your yellow bowls.

  2. We could all use a little librarian! In my cupboard I have to make sure the gluten-free ingredients are stored at the top and that everything else that might contaminate are very tightly sealed below. Now if I could just find a way to index...

  4. Wanda, I had been looking for some time for a yellow Pyrex bowl like my mother's. Finally found this one last year at Salvation Army and almost jumped on it! The other yellow bowl came at a much dearer cost, bought at an antique store. I'd been looking at it for months and finally bargained her down to a price I could swallow. I love using it so it was worth every penny.

  5. Those sewing machine drawers came out of an old treadle machine, as I'm sure you know, quinn. The sewing machine itself was gone when we bought the thing for $1 (the people at the yard sale begged us to take it!). The rest of the cabinet was ruined but the drawers were in good shape. We used the iron base to make a table so most of the machine is still in use.

  6. I never thought about the problem of separating the gluten products from gluten free. Goodness, that complicates a kitchen, Ronda!

  7. At one time when I didn't have as much food stocked up I had my can foods alphabetized! lol I now try to put like items together. Things I use to make Chinese or Mexican are together. I keep changing my pantry so much lately that I don't know where things are! lol

  8. I hate it when my cupboards get in a mess, DH never puts things back where he finds them which drives me mad as I have ' a place for everything' and when things aren't where I expect them to be it's very irritating indeed!

  9. Rowan, I feel your pain! I have one of those too. He also never closes a cabinet door or drawer. Maddening. I guess these things just aren't on his to-do list.

  10. What's visible in this cabinet is the kind of thing I still need to buy even though we provide most of our own food: flour, sugar, peanut butter, spices, raisins, cocoa, baking chocolate, baking powder, etc. I also occasionally but Rotel tomatoes because they're a quick addition to some dishes but I'd like to make my own this year. A few cans of beans are backups to the ones I can. Although a person can grow/forage/hunt a lot of food there are still things we need to buy. I organize too, Angela, but not as well as you. Mine is in baking/dry grains/ canned stuff/sauces order, but that's about it.
