Choices

Written at camp last night, watching a thunderstorm.

The storm broke in earnest this afternoon. Thunder, lightning, and a straight down deluge broke the humidity and the heat. While we were up on the Scenic Highway and in the  Cranberry Glades clouds threatened but held off releasing their heavy load of water until I was back at camp.  Here, I sit on the porch, swinging gently , sipping hot coffee as the storm rumbles around me. There are no voices other than that of the storm. Water pours from gutters, puddles in the road ruts, shines on every leaf.

Tonight there is a square dance in town at the Opera House. Will I go? Maybe, but it won't be easy to leave the simple comfort of this place. There will be music, laughing, stomping feet, whirling bodies in the old building beside the river in this small isolated town. It will be a good time.

Here, on this porch there will be the rushing of the river, the steady drip from leaves and eaves. There will be flitting birds, shy rabbits, golden light in the kitchen, maybe a hummingbird at the feeder. It will be a good time.

If you had to choose, what would you do?

  1. Well now, that would depend on my mood. Sometimes I love a crowd, and I am really fond of square dancing. On the other hand, I do enjoy my peaceful times as well.
