Back Roads and Covered Bridges

Cool and windy today,, high only reached 54. Frost is expected tonight. There is very little mast this year, and most walnuts and hickory nuts have only shriveled kernels. The deer will be hungry this winter.

I went out and picked some bouquets, anticipating a possible frost tonight.  Some of the flowers are still so pretty, it will be sad if they get bit. But it is time, I know. We can't stop the passage of seasons any more than we can stop the passage of our life. So I try to look forward to each season and each change, savoring all that is good as it comes.

Yesterday we took a little road trip. I had bought a cabinet from a friend and needed to pick it up, and there was a new vendor mall we wanted to check out. So we combined a little business with pleasure and had a nice day.

One of my goals was to find a few covered bridges. There are many still standing in Ohio, quite a few of which are not far from us. We decided to go to two of them.

The first was not so easy to find and the GPS took us on a long winding trail to get there. This was the Blackwood bridge. This one was closed to thru traffic, and since it was literally a dead-end, vandals took full advantage if its isolation.

Look at this--  pegged together!

I hope there are plans to restore the Blackwood bridge. What a shame if it is left to rot away.

The second bridge we visited was the Kidwell bridge, and it was in much better condition, allowing traffic to pass through. Here too, though, people with spray cans added their unfortunate touches. There was plenty of trash too, around and on the bridge. It is disheartening to see people mistreat such valuable historical places. Still, this was a very picturesque bridge and was quite easy to find.

I found this reinforcing interesting.  Was it part of the original construction, do you think?

The light was so unusual I decided to try a selfie.

We hope to go back this week to find more bridges. They fascinate me, and this is the perfect time of year for road trips.

On the way to the last bridge, we passed a sign that intrigued us. More about that tomorrow.

  1. Cool that you found bridges to visit...so sorry to see the vandalism. Kids need something more interesting to use their energies on. Loved your selfie! It is softly lit.
