Two Beginnings

53 this morning, cloudy and looking like rain. Then high winds and clearing.

The hellebores are blooming! Daffodils have buds too, so early this year. No crocus yet, which might be because chipmunks dug them up. Again. We planted more but they will be late since we planted late.Linking for the first time to Floral Friday.

Two things starting up. First, it's seed-starting time. It seems that garden season just ended, but here we go again. Today I planted leeks, cabbage, early tomatoes and some peppers. Next week I will get a lot more going. This frame is the frame of one of our small greenhouse; I'll use it inside until the weather warms up. The lights are new this year. We shall see how well they work.

The West Virginia Extension Service put out a monthly garden to-do list. Talk about ambitious.  I don't think we will do a quarter of this, but I suppose it's a good guideline.

The second project is a big mess: painting the kitchen.

We are doing one wall at a time, taking everything down, moving out the cabinets, etc. Our kitchen is like old time ones--most are the cabinets are freestanding. And heavy! Our ceilings are higher than most too; in the kitchen they are 9 at the back wall and 10 feet on the other wall. Which is not as high as the living room, which goes from 10 to 12 feet. And that room is next in line for paint.

So lots of work, but I am looking forward to a bright kitchen and tiny green plants soon. Nice!

  1. It's so difficult to decorate a room which you have to use every day. I used to do the painting in Mum and Dad's house and learned to undertake the task when they were away on holiday - never could make any progress when having to constantly tidy up for the next mealtime or, as you can probably imagine, having constant interruptions for cups of tea! Happy days.

    1. I can certainly imagine! It is tricky. This afternoon I hurriedly boiled water for macaroni, so I could mix it with leftover spaghetti sauce to make a quick supper,,,which we had to eat on our laps because tbe table is full of everything moved off walls and counters. But two walls are done and we are starting the third, so the end is in sight. Then we start the living roo.

  2. It’s nice to think of spring bulbs pushing thought … somewhere. 😀

    1. I bet. Yours must still be deep under snow I imagine. But you will not envy us our hot summer, I am sure.

  3. Great to see the promise of new plants in those pots...and I like the plastic sleeves to keep them moist. I'm guessing those are grow lights, with some different spectrum of light.

    1. The sleeves are just ziplock baggies, which I will wash and re-use when the plants are done with them. It works well for me usually. The lights have 3 settings and a timer, and so far I like them. We shall see how they do.

  4. Oh my, that IS a task, especially in a room that is in frequent use. I used to enjoy painting walls, probably because I did it so seldom that there was plenty of time to forget how much work it was ;)
