65 this morning. The weather has been so nice, with cool mornings and evenings. It gets up to the low 80s but such a happy change from the humidity of last week.
It has happened at last: granddaughter Sarah's cabin has arrived. Or at least, half of it has. The past 4 days have been an adventure indeed.
It all started for real with a message last Monday from Sarah, saying the cabin would arrive in stages, with the first part coming on Saturday. She flew in to Columbus, Ohio, only a couple hours drive from here. Friday she spent getting some work finished up on the site. Then, 7:30am Saturday, we heard that the truck had taken the wrong fork of our road and had to back out a mile or so-- our road is one lane, so the big truck with the green container caused quite a stir on the holler. This photo was taken by a neighbor who met it coming backwards.
The driver was a pro, and it wasn't long before we saw it coming down our hill. Since he couldn't make the turn st the top of our driveway, he had to back down.
A problem arose at this curve, however. Even though we cut a small tree to make this turn easier, the cab got into soft dirt from the recent rains, and he was stuck.
So our son Derek hooked his Dodge Ram to the big truck, and pulled him out.
The truck managed to back down the rest of the way, but trouble reared its head again when he tried to back up Sarah's hill.
The wheels under the trailer got into soft ground and the whole thing began tipping. Fortunately it was just at that moment that neighbor Jaime arrived with his bulldozer. The container was unloaded from the trailer, and hooked to the dozer.
So Jamie unhooked, brought the dozer around to the side, and pushed the container straight. Tricky, but it worked.
This time he hooked on from the winch on the back of the dozer, and up the road it went.
And finally, it was in place and waiting for step 2, getting it up on the foundation.
I am in awe of the skill of truckers. I have trouble reversing my CRV. I have given up on parallel parking. Mind you, my older vehicle doesn’t do it for me. 🤓
ReplyDeleteYes, I too watch with deep respect when they pullout stuff like this. My son Derek is a truck driver and he said this guy was excellent. The problems weren't with his driving, just the terrain.
