59 this morning. Lovely cool, fall- like weather lately, but changing this weekend as the heat returns.
It amazes me that September is here already, although all of nature is ready for it. Leaves beginning to change and drop, nuts falling in the woods, and that particular shade of yellow to the light.
We stocked up our booths on Thursday for the long weekend, a job that typically takes all day. Yesterday we dressed out three roosters and put them in the freezer, then I made bone broth, which cooked overnight and is just now out of the canner. Tbese roosters...remember the hens we bought back in May to replace our flock that had been killed by coyotes. Yeah, well, 3 of those hens turned out to be roosters. We had no need of these guys, so into the food stock they went. Not a fun job, but it's done.
The rest of the day was spent cleaning and cooking, in preparation for our weekend company. We had visitors last night too, our young neighbors from whom we buy eggs. It was a nice break after a long, hard day. Our chickens are just now beginning to lay, so soon we should have plenty of our own eggs again.

ReplyDeleteCleaning chickens, or deer, is something everyone should have to do at least once. Too many people have no idea where their food comes from. Doing what you are, brings you closer to nature and you appreciate where your food comes from more than the average person.
