The Railroad Graveyard

Where do old trains go when they die? Some of them apparently go to Belington, WV.

We took a different route last Monday after my storytelling performance in Philippi--a route that took us through the small town of Belington. We've been here before but just passing through. This time we stopped for lunch in a local diner, and as we were driving out of town I noticed trains. Lots of them. And none of them moving. So of course I had to go see.

What we found was the repair shop and storage area for a local scenic railway. There were so many different trains, in different states of repair. I could have happily spent the rest of the day rambling around there, but since it was probably private property I contented myself with photos. Here's a few of them.

This is what attracted my attention as I looked down an alley between two buildings. "Turn!" I said. And Larry obligingly turned.

We spoke with the people in the truck. They are involved in a project to renovate this old building into apartments, shops, and cafes. Pretty cool.

This looks like the former train station.

Loved this big old guy!

So yeah...we stopped here and just took photos. Thank goodness for a zoom lens.

"Little red caboose, little red caboose, riding behind the train..."

I think I'm in love with this engine.

An old-timer.

This one was actually running. Just sitting there idling on the tracks. I so wanted to go inside!

Apparently this car had an oopsy.

Trains, trains, trains. They were everywhere, all ages, all types. One day I'll go back and find out more about this place.
