Storytelling and Workshops

I'm on the road again today, leading a workshop at WVU for scientists and others interested in the intersection of storytelling and science. Should be an interesting day.

Thursday evening I was the Tamarack Arts Center in Beckley, WV, telling Appalachian stories and singing ballads for a tour group of people from all across the US. This has been a week of diverse stortelling events, for sure.

Next week will be final prep for my weeklong workshop for Allegheny Echoes, in the beautiful mountains of Pocahontas county, WV.  Here's the draft of my plans for the week. Looks like a fun time!

Monday: morning meet & greet, overview of the week, an introduction to storytelling, and writing prompts. In the afternoon, we will go on a field trip with Kirk Judd to the site of some of the Hammon family graves and to an old log church. When we return to the classroom, we'll do more writing if time allows.

Tuesday: morning we will meet at the Greenbrier River Trail parking lot at Buckeye. Do they need directions for that? Plan to meet at 9:30 and walk to the Duncan Rocks. Along the way we will examine plants, discuss folk medicine and uses for some of what we see. I'll present a poem or two along the way. At the Rocks, they'll get their assignment and can stay there to write, or go back to the cabin where I am staying to write. We will share our writing before leaving, as time allows. Afternoon we will continue on the naturelore theme with storytelling and flash fiction and poertry prompts.

Wednesday: morning will begin with storytelling and ballads, and we'll try our hand at writing a ballad. Afternoon Kari Gunter-Seymour will be our guest presenter. You can read more about her at this site.

Thursday: morning we will discuss the evening student concert and select what we want to present. We'll also have more writing prompts and sharing. In the afternoon, those who can will attend the Pearl S. Buck presentation by Kari. Evening of course is the student concert.

Friday morning we'll do a prompt or two, discuss the student concert, and wrap up the week, as well as write our group poem and complete evaluations.

I have tote bags courtesy of WV Writers, and other freebies for attendees.
