38 this morning, warming to the mid 60's through the day. Mostly sunny. The ground is still almost swampy, even here on top of the hill, because of the melting snow, which is almost all gone now.
I rarely run into a piece of glass these days that I cannot identify at least in part, but today I have three that have me completely stumped. Here's the troublesome trio:
The one on the left is paneled, with a grape motif. I have not found anything online like it at all. It looks like Westmoreland Glass to me, but there are no listings for it anywhere. There is however a pitcher made by a company called Plum Glass, which was apparently comprised of former Westmoreland Glass workers when that company went out of business. Could my vase have been made by Plum Glass? Maybe. No markings so it's a mystery still.
The center vase should have been a no-brainer--my immediate thought was that it was made by Fenton. Again, no maker's mark to help me out. I've looked and looked online and have not found one exactly like it.
For these two vases, I've listed them on eBay with a question mark after the name of the company I think made them. I don't like doing that, but after hours of looking, I have thrown in the towel. Neither is probably particularly valuable so there has to be limit to how much time I spend on them, but still...I hate giving up.
The last has at least a little information. There is a paper tag taped inside, and someone has written "Venetian Glass Bot in England" on it. So I know that much at least--but no more. My guess is that this is an older piece, based on the wear to the gold trim. It's a really lovely piece, with very fine horizontal ribs all the way down. I think possibly made in the 1920's are deco era, but that's just a guess.
So a frustrating day of research, but at least the day wasn't a total waste. While working on these, I had beans in the canner in the kitchen--black beans and pintos today. I ended up with 27 pints, so that should keep my hubby in beans for a while. My tummy doesn't tolerate them well, so I rarely eat dried beans, but it's great to have them on hand for Larry.
If you're wondering, yes, there are two KitchenAid mixers in the background of the last photo. I have one that belonged to my mother, and then a couple weeks ago I found another one exactly like it, same attachments and all, for 14.99. Who can pass up a deal like that? So now I'm trying to decide which one to keep. I am attached to the one my mother had, for obvious reasons, but I fear it might be giving out on me as it makes some odd noises sometimes. Maybe it just needs oil, I don't know. I am thinking I should try that, before deciding which one to keep. First, though, I need to find out what kind of oil I need.
The surveyors were back out today, putting up corner markers for the piece of land my granddaughter is buying, so progress is being made in that direction.
And that's about all the news for this day. Not a lot, really, is it? The world news continues to be so sad, and the oil situation has us thinking about buying a natural gas generator since we have free natural gas, and then buying an electric car. I'm not sure all of that would be cost-effective in the long run, but it's something to think about.
Meanwhile, there's Ukraine. How my heart hurts for those people. Do you feel as hopeless and helpless about it as I do? What a mess, and what a danger to the rest of that whole region.
Yes, I feel so bad for the people of Ukraine. I wish there was more I could do for them besides pray for the end of the war that they never asked for. It's a sad situation. As for the KitchenAids-tough decision there. I'm so sentimental, I'd keep Mom's mixer just because, but if repairs cost more than it's worth...I don't know what I'd do.
