50 this morning, partly cloudy.
What a beautiful morning to have our tea and coffee on the porch. The birds are here in droves, busily working the feeders and singing their hearts out. Daffodils are blooming--some are fallen over because their stems froze in the cold weather we had over the weekend, but most of them are doing all right. Little miniature daffodils are popping up in places I don't remember planting them, and the same is true of the regular daffodils. They certainly make themselves at home here, which is fine by me.
We spent yesterday working on our booths at both locations. With gas going up so much, we've decided that it will be some savings to do both places on the same day. It really wasn't difficult, and I was no tireder than usual at the end of the day. We loaded the van beforehand so could get an early start.
We also picked up 20 bags of mulch, and put that down in the flowerbeds today. Now Larry is in bed with a muscle relaxer, poor guy. He does the heavier lifting, and managed to twist something. Hopefully the pill will do the trick, because we've got to put down another 50 bags or so before we're done.
I have to admit, I do mulch the lazy gardener's way, but it certainly works for us. I don't rake out my beds, or pull the weeds that have already started to come up. I just mulch right over it all. The leaves and other organic matter just rot into the soil, and if a weed pops through the mulch, I get them with my small flamethrower. I know this is completely not the method recommended by experts, but each year my gardens get richer and the plants thrive.
This evening it's back to town for more mulch and to pick up a curio cabinet I found yesterday. And that will be all the excitement for us on this St. Patrick's Day, I think. No big green celebration, although perhaps gardening is the greenest celebration of all?
Our West Virginia legislature has finished their session for this year, thank goodness. They have managed to do so much damage to our state, pushing us further and further back in time, in my opinion. Thankfully some of their more egregious efforts failed--like trying to take over control of the state board of education. Given their demonstrated poor decision making and backward views about so many important issues, I would hate to see what a debacle they would make of our schools. Sometimes I despair that this state will ever be a place that affirms my personal values. I know I'm not in the majority here, but it is hard to watch what is happening and know that my vote will never change any of it.
Sounds like things are falling in line for you, hopefully the weather will be great and your garden will begin to take shape. Petrol here is now over €2 a litre and rising every few days. Electicity costs are going up next month 27% and gas/oil is rising 30% starting next month. So everyone is trying to keep things simple to save on the bottom line. ReplyDeleteSounds like you have some good plans in place to keep your energy costs down. It does pay in the long run to consider these things doesn't it. I have been re-thinking things here too.
