The Lafayette Hotel

20F this morning, clear and frosty.

I thought I would post photos of the hotel we stayed in Saturday night, the Lafayette in Marietta,  Ohio.

This is an old hotel, full of lavish woodwork, but updated to have pretty much all the amenities people have come to expect. It is named for the Revolutionary War General, Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette from France who had quite an impact on America and aided in the victory over England.

Lafayette later returned to America for an extended trip, where he was feted everywhere he went---including this Ohio River town.

The exterior of the hotel was once crowned with a round turret at the top of the front corner along with a few other ornamentation that were removed during some past renovation,  unfortunately.

Inside though, most of the original grandeur is still in place.

The large ship's wheel that centers the chandelier is a nod to the river's steamboat history, in which Marietta played a vibrant role.

Our room, which I reserved through Booking.com, was small but held everything we needed, and the river view was lovely. I chose twin beds, thinking that after a long evening on the town we might sleep better. The beds were beautiful antiques, as was all the furniture in the room. And were wonderfully comfortable.

The desk had three secret drawers, which, if you are familiar with this style of desk, you probably know how to locate.

With my love of ruby glass, you know I liked this lamp!

The bridge over the river, from Ohio to West Virginia.

The river at night. So pretty.

The only thing that might not please some people was the small bathroom, with a small tub. For us it was fine, since we take showers anyway. And of course there are bigger rooms, large suites and

a penthouse. I would have loved to see that.

There was no breakfast at the hotel that I was aware of, except for what was available at the in-house Starbucks Cafe, but with so many other options for dining out, that's not really a problem.

Would I stay there again? Absolutely.  The bar and grille, with its antique bar and river view, serves delicious food, my favorite being their fish and chips. The lobby is cozy and welcoming, and the location of the hotel, right in the heart of the historic old town area, can't be beat. There's even easy parking!
