62°f/16.7°C, raining in the morning, afternoon partly cloudy and very humid. Now, at 6pm, a big storm is blowing in. It rained while the sun was shining this morning, a sure sign of rain again tomorrow.
Well, apparently I am dead. I died on December 23, 1996, so who has been writing this blog and living with my husband I do not know.
At least, according to the Veterans Administration, that's when I died. And I have been collecting a "dependent's benefit" ever since. Which they want to stop paying.
I was pretty surprised by this news as I feel very much alive, and I must be the hardest-workibg ghost around.
Of course, this is probably the work of DOGE, who evidently can't even spell my name properly or double check the Social Security number before concluding I'm deceased. A quick call to a VA rep has started the process of correcting this stupidity and restoring me to life. The only not-funny part of this is the stress it causes Larry, who gets very upset about things like this. He's got good reason because these messes can be a bear to straighten out. So I will deal with it, and continue to joke about it for the sake of his nerves. Such things don't shorten my stride much, they're just an aggravation.
Up until we picked up the mail, we had had a good day. I took a tote to our Ripley booth and worked in rearranging our stock while Larry went downtown and got a haircut. We stopped for Taco Tuesday lunch at our friend Shari's store and visited with a few friends there. Then Larry picked up a few things at the grocery store while I checked out Goodwill. Back home to get thst crazy letter, which I dealt with while he repaired a flat tire on the mower. I planted the rose bush he gave me for Mothers Day, fertilized the garden--all this rain is washing away nutrients, I fear--and generally puttered around in the flowerbeds.
The herb garden is coming along. Still need mulch for the upper bank.
Now we are watching a big storm move in. Much thunder and lightning and wind but so far just light rain. I hope it stays like this, as we can do without gullywashers. In a nearby town the streets are full of water.
Fingers crossed that the power stays on!

$hit!...how could that just happen??? I am glad that it's all sorted out, Sue. Your garden is looking good :-)
ReplyDeleteI think it was carelessness and rushing to try to get as many "cheaters" as possible by DOGE and Musk. They don't care how much they disrupt people's lives, they just want numbers. Imagine how many elderly people are getting this notice, and all the stress it's causing them.
DeleteGood luck straightening out your records. It can be an aggravating process. I had never heard a spiderwort called a radiation plant. That's Interesting, but I'm not sure I would want to test it out.
ReplyDeleteMe either! I have had these plants for years, and thankfully never saw them turn pink.
DeleteI must say, you look pretty darn good for someone who has been dead so long! You've got to joke as you figure it out, otherwise you would drive yourself crazy(ier)!
ReplyDeleteExactly! It's just an aggravation. I just hope it doesn't take them too long to correct it!
DeleteDefinitely the work of the muskrat's minions..and a pain to correct I have heard. All the best with that.
ReplyDeleteYour garden is coming along steadily,.the best way for a garden.
Thanks, gz. Yes definitely the work of Musk and minions.
DeleteDid you call a number that was on the letter or did you contact an official VA rep that you already knew?
ReplyDeleteI thought scam when I first saw that notice.
I looked up the number online to be sure I spoke with the legit ace, Ellen. You never know these days. The letter, though, was definitely official, had his SSN , etc. Thank you though for bringing up that possibility, because we all have to be so careful these days.
DeleteWith all of the heavy gardening you do, you are probably one of the most alive people that I know.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back to the living world. Incredible that Doge can't even take the time to check and make sure the info is corrected. Lazy just like all the others.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if I can grow Mexican primrose here. Must find out. Your Peony is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI hope you can straighten out that "Dependent's benefit" thing ASAP, especially since it causes some stress.
What nonsense! Have they cut off your payments already?
ReplyDeleteI was reading on The Contrarian of all the safety measures they have cut that were passed by Congress with bipartisan support. The mess just keeps getting worse.
Oh, that's awful. You know that things will take forever to straighten out, especially with so many changes at the VA. (Are you even a veteran or did they pick you out of thin air?) I don't understand the mechanics, I just know that everything DOGE touches destroys something. At least they haven't touched your garden. It's splendid!
ReplyDeleteThat chainsaw wielded by Elon Musk was indeed a fitting representation of DOGE’s methods. I am sure that many are not as sanguine about disruptions to their lives and benefits as you have been. I hope staff remain to help you with the process of correcting the error - or have they all been fired?
