Our Little Boy took off in the night with Buddy, and sadly he did not survive their wild adventure.
Apparently another dog in the neighborhood came roaming down here, and our dogs took off with him. Buddy has a super-strong electronic fence collar on, but perhaps the battery was weak because he never goes past the barrier. And Little Boy does not usually go past the top of the driveway.
This time however they went over 5 miles from home, to the highway, where Little Boy was hit by a vehicle at 5:15 in the morning. Poor Little Boy, he didn't know about highways. The only other time they went so far was over a year ago, and their trek was through the woods along an abandoned road that time. That was when we got Buddy's super strong collar, because he is directionally dyslexic apparently and doesn't know how to backtrack. And Little Boy would go wherever Buddy went.
We found Buddy at the home of some kind people who let us know they had him, then we found Little Boy and brought him home to bury.
My heart is just broken. He was such a good boy and was going to be an amazing dog as he aged. He was just over 2 years old. We have never lost a dog so young.
We miss him. Our dogs miss him and keep looking for him and barking, trying I guess to call him.
We will get another dog, because Buddy needs a playmate and Daisy needs someone to mother. And I need another furfriend.
It just doesn't feel right with only two dogs here.
RIP, Little Boy. You were one of the best.

ReplyDeleteThis is so sad. How did you find them? Did the person who hit Little Boy stop and call you?
ReplyDeleteI put a message on the county lost pets page, and a young man messaged me that he had Buddy. Then a neighbor saw Little Boy and had the Humane Society call. The lady whose house was by where he was hit came out and helped us. She had been so upset all day, bless her. Such good people here, all helping.

ReplyDeleteI’m so sorry about Little Boy. It’s enough of a gut punch to lose them after many years, but so abruptly and so young just knocks you loose. Best wishes finding a new companion for Buddy and Daisy.

ReplyDeleteOh Sue, this had to be such a hard post to write and even harder with the realization that Little Buddy was gone. One can only hope it was instant and that he didn't suffer. He sounds like such a wonderful friend for your family and partner for your other animals. I am so deeply sorry, Sue. I know what a part of the family our pets become and it is a profoundly sad loss.

ReplyDeleteSo sorry for the loss of your sweet dog. Several years ago our white dog Lakota was struck by a UPS van delivering a package to us. It was a snowy night on a deserted driveway but the van driver didn't see a white dog on a white road in the dark. Lakota was an old gal and mostly deaf and never learned about staying out of the way of a vehicle since she lived in the middle of the country at the end of a very long driveway. It happened in an instant. The UPS driver was a new trainee and shaken by the accident. I think she thought she might lose her job. But it was no one's fault. Accidents do happen. But it is never easy, no matter the circumstances, to lose a beloved pet. Batsy in Idaho

ReplyDeleteLosing an animal friend is so very painful and surely Little Boy's ending was a horrific one. It is never possible to 'replace' an animal--and I don't think we really try to do that. There are always dogs and cats who need a kindly home and so we open the door to yet another. Years ago in Wyoming I had to put down a young dog who was a runner--we couldn't contain her, she was leading our Border Collie off on her jaunts; neighbors threatening to shoot both on sight. It was painful. I hope that a 'just right' dog makes his/her way into your hearts.
ReplyDeleteOh Sue, I am so very sorry to hear this news. Little Boy had a short life but a very rich and happy one! And I hope it is a comfort to you to at least know what happened, however sad. Much sympathy to you and Larry and Buddy and Daisy.
