50°f/10°C, very windy, partly cloudy after thunderstorms last night.
Wild weather we're having this month! Snow, then 70° yesterday, thunderstorms last night, and high winds today. Weatherlore says that a thunderstorm in November means one of 2 things: a fertile year ahead, or a very cold winter. I think i will choose the first, but I doubt my opinion matters to the weather gods. These winds by the way, are often referred to by meteorologists as "witch winds", and the witch winds of November are known to be particularly damaging. It was just such a wind that caused the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, apparently.
It was a quiet day around here. We were both pretty tired; picking up from the auction and a private seller, stops at a couple thrifts, Aldi's and finally Kroger pretty much wore us out yesterday. So today, late breakfast, then I worked on identifying all those pocketknivss from the auction while Larry basically just rested. He got moving later in the day, though.
The knives were an interesting rabbit hole. Trying to find markings on them, searching online for the exact same ones, and then sorting into piles took several hours. One pile was trash, knives that were just too damaged to be worth selling. Another was the $5 pile of pretty good but not valuable knives, next was the $10-15 pile, and last was the best ones. Most need cleaning so I searched how to clean pocketknives and found a good tutorial. Then I had to order the right stuff to do it--penetrating oil, wet/dry sandpaper, a brass brush. I went ahead and priced the $5 knives because I am not going to spend time cleaning those, but the rest are on hold u til the supplies come.
After that I did a few ebay listings. I found some pretty nice and fairly rare glasses at the thrift store, so I got those and a few other things listed. Here are the glasses I found:
This is the second set. I could not find the maker of these but they sell for about $25 for the set. Again, I got them for $3.59. Not as great a deal as the others, but that's okay. Both sets were made in the 50's.
Yesterday we stopped at a gas station, and I found some cute Pez containers to put in the stocking for
the 2 little great-grands who live close by. The young lady working at the store said she had 5 children, well, 5 between her and her boyfriend, and all are below 5 years old! She laughed and said coming to work was a break for her! She reminded me of my granddaughter Hannah, who also has 5 now, 2 of her own and then her boyfriend's 3. Quite the juggling act with the other parents, and of course a full-time job. Whew. At least when I had my fifth child, my four oldest were in their teens and completely self-sufficient. And when those four were under 5, I was a stay-at-home mom.
We had lunch at our favorite place on Marietta, the Lafayette Hotel. While there, we got into conversation with a man who said he plays guitar and sings every day at his mother's nursing home. Every day! The residents love it--and him--and he said they have become like family to him. His mother is 91; he is retired and he really works hard on getting together a program every day. What a guy. He has sure earned his wings.
I started this post early this morning. Now here it is almost 8pm and I am finally finishing it. Larry has already gone to bed, poor guy, and the dogs are all snoozing comfortably in their favorite places. Looks like it will be a very quiet evening to finish off a low-key day. That's all rights with me!

Gosh, I wish my opinion mattered to the weather gods! Here in California it’s either too much rain or not enough. Think drought or mudslides. Floods or wildfires. UGH.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you had a lovely day yesterday!
We have been having a rather mild Nov., but this week is said to be much colder..I like the first set of glasses.
ReplyDeleteThat was definitely a full day!
ReplyDeleteFor an older naturalist like me a pocket knife is an essential tool, but the younger generation seems to mange well without one. Then again, we used to keep field note books, but the modern way is with a camera and countless apps on a smart phone. It may be the mirage conferred by old age, but I think we were more observant.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard the term witch winds before, but we've certainly been having a lot of wind around here.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of witch winds, but I look out the window this morning and see yon tree blowing back and forth.
ReplyDeleteI nearly got "killed" today by a huge sign collapsing due to strong winds.
ReplyDeleteSo nice to read about the guitar-player and good luck with the selling.
...fall is a tug-a-war between winter and summer.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, I'll take a fertile (and quiet) year ahead please!
ReplyDeleteI have posting days like that! Witch winds are new to me but I have a vision. I might have to look up pocket knives. I have a number of my dad's and have no idea if they have value or not, but they are probably pretty dull.
ReplyDeleteI am laughing that you and some in comments refer to the 'weather gods'. It was a standing joke in my parents' home and I have forwarded it to my own. You appeal to the weather gods if you need particular weather, or propitiate them, etc. Good fun.
ReplyDeleteNice glassware. I hope the knives prove a good item; cleaning them is miserable work, depending on what they have been used for. Sappy wood, for one, is really gummy.
There was a woman who posted 'thunderstorms in fall, no winter at all!' She has always found this true, she says. The very next day, we got 8 inches of lake effect snow!
ReplyDeletePocket knives make great gifts for young guys ( I can't imagine a girl wanting one but who knows?) but they sure can't carry them at school. That would be asking for a suspension these days.
