40°f/4.4°C, hazy. Rain expected later today
Some of you commented on my sisters photo yesterday. Yes, I have seven sisters, all younger than me. I also have 5 brothers, 3 of whom are older. So that made me the oldest girl, which meant I did a lot of babysitting, especially in my teen years. It also explains why I married young! And why having 5 sons of my own didn't seem like a big deal.
Yesterday was one of those days when you do what you have been putting off---like cleaning out the base cabinets in the kitchen. I have to wonder how I get so many extra baking pans. Do they breed in the dark? And I have this steamed pudding pan that I have used only once. Maybe I need to either find a recipe that I like, or just give up the pan. It's just that it's so cute! Anyway, that job is out of the way, thank goodness. Still a couple more cabinets to go through, though.
Then it was time to get out the tiller and work up some ground for bulbs and peony roots, and get those planted. I was so careful getting the first lots in, but I was tired and the last ones I shoved in wherever. And then, guess what came via FedEx after dark? Yes, bulbs I ordered months ago and forgot about! So those will need to be planted, and now the weather is going to turn very cold and nasty. What timing.
Larry was happy that he was able to finish the brushhogging, and to also plow some new ground for next year's garden. He wants to grow more corn than what we raised this year, and potatoes, which we didn’t have space for. He has grown a garden in this area before, and those 2 crops do pretty well there. Here I am, though, trying to downsize our veggie garden, and he plows up more space! But you know I don't mind one bit.
We also took a couple bushels of pears to a neighbor, as we do not need them. There are plenty more still to be picked up, and even more on the tree. I think this makes about 7 bushels so far; we made pear cider, spiced pears, and pear jam, but don't need any canned pears; I am hoping it hope we can give away the rest.
Today I will finally get to sorting out the Christmas stuff for the booths. I had hoped to take it in today, but I am just plain tired, so will take it easy today.
Tonight we plan to go hear a friend playing at the independent bookstore store in Charleston, which will be a nice evening out.
Did I take photos of any of yesterday's activities? Nope, was too busy! So here are some I meant to post some time or other.
I said goodbye to this guy this week. This is a ceramic candle lantern of the Braxton County Monster, a pretty fascinating story of one of West Virginia's cryptids. I won this as a door prize in 2002 at a conference, and have enjoyed having it, but it was time for him to go. Now was a good time to sell it, as interest in cryptids seems to be at an all-time high. He fetched $150 on ebay.

You sure do stay busy! I declutter on a regular basis yet somehow always find a ton of stuff to get rig of every single time. I love your bunnies! :)
ReplyDeleteI hear you! Constant decluttering here!
DeleteThe glass that's so old and so pretty - wow. I love it. You come from such a big family. It looks like you and your sisters are close. That's amazing. I'm trying to imagine my nearest neighbor being 3/4 of a mile away. Some of my neighbors - well, I wish they lived that far away. I didn't know rabbits were counted as white meat, and if that's the case - why not raise them for food. The photos are so pretty. I don't garden or grow much. I had quite a few flower planted for the summer, because my son agreed to do that for me.
ReplyDeleteFor years the closest neighbors were a mile away, then the next closest was 2 miles away. Now their kids have grown up and built houses on their land, so sadly we have neighbors as close as 1/3 of a mile from us. Too close, I think.
Delete13 kids! Ye gods that is quite the family! I am so envious of your asparagus patch. It is what I aspire to .
ReplyDeleteWant some seeds? I can mail them to you.
DeleteI haven't grown hollyhocks for quite some time and seldom see than around here.
ReplyDeleteI think it's considered an old fashioned plant these days, but I have always wanted it, because I grew up with it.
DeleteMy mom had 2 sisters and 4 brothers and I thought that's a lot...LOL...love those black walnuts!!
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to cooking with them, Angie!
DeleteOmgosh how did your mother cope with all those children? I had 4, a girl and 3 boys. You seem to be harvesting all the time. My hubby says rabbit stew is very tasty, but not for me.
ReplyDeleteWell, the older kids cared for the younger ones. That was our job. We cooked our own breakfasts most days, had assigned tasks, packed our school lunches ourselves.. but things did get out of hand and hectic!
DeleteI love everything about this post! Yes, it was time to get rid of whatever that black and red figurine was. I also loved the fact that you talked about your rabbits. Yes, some people may not like it, but it is part of your life and you should talk about it. Too many people think meat just appears in grocery stores in neat little packages.
ReplyDeleteExactly, Jim. A friend of our granddaughter was here one day when we were dressing out some rabbits. She stayed for dinner and liked the meat, but jokes that we totally traumatized her! Reality can be tough.
Delete...wow, what a family!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your photo catch up. At our previous house, I would find asparagus here and there, I assume planted from birds. I gathered them together an made my own small asparagus patch.
ReplyDeleteNice! I often spot asparagus on roadside, probably as you say, a gift from the birds.
DeleteDon't remind me of lower kitchen cupboards...and the multiplying baking dishes! Love your old glassware, guess I should call it antique. A very pretty arrangement. Making beauty is a great activity, as well as bounty for nutrition!
ReplyDeleteYou are right, Barb. It relaxes me to create little vignettes around the house.
DeleteAn idea for your walnuts: put them in a empty feed sack and THEN drive over them. Saves time and bending :) I've been working since Spring on an assessment of Every Thing in my house so I can reorganize the place. It's a process! but I'm glad I'm doing it. I think I need to start ebay-ing again, because it's easier to part with lifelong items like some of my Pyrex if I think about it in terms of how many bales of hay could be bought with the proceeds.
ReplyDeleteThat tree is spectacular! I love your blooming flowers, too. How fun to have fall foliage AND flowers simultaneously.
ReplyDeleteYour rabbits are so cute!
Thanks for introducing me to the term "cryptid." I hadn't heard that before!
Also, I'm going to see if pineapple sage seeds are available - I've never heard of it, and it would be nice to see that color late in the season.
