Breaking Out

6°f/-14.4°C, clear.

Sweet little guy waiting on the feeder. The birds have been busy around here, and Larry keeps them supplied with seed and peanut butter.  Look at all the tracks on the deck under the feeder! They have certainly smashed down the snow.

A warm-up on the way, starting today! Yesterday morning we saw -2°f, bone-chilling cold. That probably seems like a heat wave to those of you in Canada, though. The snow is hanging on, not really melting as much as packing down and evaporating. Rain is expected later this week, which should make a right mess of things. Ice, probably.

So today I am breaking out of hibernation, not because of neccessity because we are still well- stocked. But I want to see the Ohio River, which is most completely iced over. That doesn't happen every year. So we will go look, and check on our booth in Ravenswood. Sales have been non-existent since January 22nd, which was, actually, the last time I went out. So probably not much is needed. Still, I have been pricing and pricing and have at least 8 totes ready, which is nice. Later in Spring when I am busy outside I won't have to worry about getting stock ready, right?

Did you watch the game yesterday? I'm not a fan of football so wasn't sad to miss it, but I did watch clips of the half-time show. What a party! What happy energy! I bet tourism to Puerto Rico skyrockets. I know there is plenty of criticism because the show was in Spanish, but how many hit songs have there been, here in the US, that were in a foreign language? As Bad Bunny pointed out, America isn't just the US. People forget that. More people in America speak Spanish than English, I'd bet.

Not much excitement around here.  I canned all the rest of the apple slices, and got 14 quarts.

I made a cobbler with some of them.

What i don't use of these apples will go into apple butter in the fall.

I have never made apple cobbler before, but it was delicious,  like apple pie filling with a sweet biscuit topping. And I made one more batch of cream of broccoli soup, which makes 3 gallons tucked in the freezer. It is so good! So except for a lot of cherry tomatoes,  I am done with all that stuff that was given to us. It kept well in the back room, thank goodness.

The only mishap was this steam burn.

In all my years of canning and cooking, I have never had a burn like this. It's looking much better than when I first did it. It's what I get for not paying attention when I lifted the lid off that pot of apples!

Yesterday was house-cleaning day. Since it was so cold out, I snagged Larry's help. Nice to get all the high places done. I still have more to do, getting a bit of a jump on spring- cleaning I guess.

  1. I am glad that it's getting warmer...we have really nice 2C warm weather here and this after even got quite a bit of sunshine. The cobbler with ice cream looks quite good.

  3. I too have been feeding the birds. I have to portion it out each day. Otherwise a full feeder gets emptied everyday! We are finally warming up.

  4. What a great picture of the tufted titmouse. We get them occasionally on our feeder, but mostly we see juncos, finches, and lately, bluebirds.

  7. You got a great photo of the Titmouse. Cute little birds! I love looking at tracks in the snow. We haven't had any because of this thick ice covering over the snow but today I saw lots of prints which means a bit of a thaw. Hooray on that one. I love broccoli and cheese soup. Your cobbler and ice cream is a winner and the canned apples will be another treat but ouch on your poor steam burn. Looks very painful! Looking forward to any photos you will have of the iced over Ohio River. That would draw me out too. We didn't watch the Super Bowl as we no longer have regular TV. We could have paid for it via streaming but putting our pennies in another direction right now. I heard good things and a few gripes about the half-time show. I have no problem with another language. Coming from the UK landing here 50 years' ago, I grew up with people coming and going from every part of the world, and languages always fascinated me. Wish I had learned one when I was young and should try now because it's great mental gymnastics so the experts say. I toy with them when I translate some of my blogging friends from different countries, using Google Translate. It's remarkable how some of the words are very similar, some :) My husband lived in Puerto Rico for a couple of years and his brother was born there (dad in the navy). They came back with nothing but good things to say about the people, the culture, they loved it. And talking about love, Bad Bunny's quote, I loved that! "The only thing more powerful than hate is love." Okay, I've gone on long enough. I was a trained typist so I can type as fast as my brain sometimes, lol! Have a great week and thanks for such a nice post.

  8. Oh my goodness, Sue! That is some steam burn! Your apple cobbler looks and sounds scrumptious!
Here today in Montreal, it was -18 Celsius this morning and by later afternoon it was -11, so it is warming up. I do love Winter, though, so I just dress warmly and enjoy the fresh air! I am just careful and nervous about ice. Snow and cold, I am fine! I am 69! LOL!
I love your snow and bird photos!
Thank you so much for sharing.
