Tybee Island

55°f this morning (about 16°C?) and clear on Tybee Island, Georgia.

We decided to grab a night by the beach on our way home from Miami, so I reserved a room at a hotel on Tybee Island. As we were driving to the island I began to regret my choice, because it seemed to be a long way out of our way---which would make for a longer drive home.

But once we got there, doubts vanished. What a cool, funky place!

Tybee is like beaches were before developers and highrises took over. Old beach cottages built before 1950, converted to shops, restaurants and b&b's, are more numerous than newer buildings. Our hotel room was a 5 minute walk from the beach and the Puerto, with little bars, shops and restaurants all around our building. It was nearly dark when we arrived, so we dumped our stuff and walked to the beach. Ahhh...

Then it was time to find food. We chose Fannie's, a simple grill with booths and some interesting barstools.

We ordered a Hawaiian pizza and had fun visiting with a Canadian couple at the next table while waiting for it to arrive. Great folks, who are now among our friends on Facebook.

Then we strolled around the corner and found a funky little bar where they were playing, of all things, bingo! We opted to just watch, and werr amused at how dead quiet it got in there when the game started.

Quietest bar I have ever been in! Beside us was a couple from Minnesota who were playing, so we got a vicarious thrill whenever they got a number. Sadly they didn't win, but we had a blast talking to them...and added more Facebook friends.

We fell into bed at 11, slept like hibernating bears and were up at 7 to get dressed and out to see the sunrise. How perfectly glorious it was!

Next was breakfast at the aptly named Sunrise restaurant,  where they sure know how to make grits and plenty of them. So good.

And then it was time to pack up and head out. I was so sad to leave. Such a cool, quirky, honey place. I hope we manage to go back, and stay longer.

  3. I'd heard of Tybee Island, but had to look at a map to see where it was. What a lovely place to have a short visit to beach and old-time beach-town relaxation.

  5. Oh lucky you! Some of my happiest memories are days we spent at beaches. I am pleased to say that I have dipped my toes in the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Mediterranean. I greeted a bold young lady walking along the seaside at the last one . . . topless!
