Happy New Year!

41°f, 5°C, overcast, occasional drizzle.

Happy New Year, friends!

We made it! 2025 here we come, ready or not.

Did you stay up to see the ball drop? I streamed it on my laptop, and was pleased that John Lennon's song Imagine was chosen as the last song before the countdown. It was a good reminder for us all.

I stayed up all evening, but Larry took a nap between 9 and 11:30. We opted to stay home, as it was raining off and on, just a miserable night. Not my choice of weather for staying out late. I watched New Year's Eve,  an annual favorite for me, then fixed up a couple small charcuterie boards, and got the champagne and glasses ready. I remembered finding a couple packs of sparklers when cleaning out drawers; I think they are at least 25 years old! I tested one and it worked, although not as good as when it was newer, but I am not so good as I was either.

Then I got Larry up to watch the ball drop, have our snacks and drinks, and lit the sparklers just before midnight. We just barely were able to light the old things! (In the photo below, Larry is worried his would go out before I snapped the photo.) It was a nice evening.

Earlier in the day I went to my doctor appointment and once again came away dissatisfied.  They really didn't tell me anything new except to come back in 3 months (and give them another $40 co-pay). So, I will continue my home exercises and hope the knee will eventually bend better.  And I doubt very much that I will go back for that appointment. Waste of time.

We had a good day, though. We stopped at a new to us restaurant in Parkersburg called Mary B's for late breakfast. My goodness, the serving sizes! And when were you in a place that offered cabbage rolls, stuffed green peppers, and chicken livers on the menu? And corned beef hash with breakfast? We brought over half of our food home to have for breakfast this morning. Great coffee, cheerful fast service...we will definitely go back...and order less food next time. Whew.

A trip to Parkersburg always means a stop in Mineral Wells for Aldi's, Goodwill, and gas. Gas is 50 cents a gallon cheaper there, and Aldi's! Great prices on meat, milk, produce. I bought steaks, even, unheard of. And chicken and a loin roast.

At the Goodwill, I came home with these guys. Maybe this should be my motto this year?

All in all, it was a good end to the year. Now to look ahead. What plans do we have? Still thinking about that. Granddaughter Ashley offered to help renovate or rebuild the chicken coop, which can certainly use it. She's a very handy girl, so this should be fun. Sarah will be here in late January--both granddaughters are in Colorado and I am considering a road trip out there, especially since granddaughter Ally is also planning to move to CO. Right now Ashley is ice-fishing in North Dakota (Jim!). She has sent photos of the walleyes she has caught. Sarah is skiing and snowmobiling, Cassie bought a house in Nashville, Michaela will graduate soon from WVU with a degree in forensic chemistry, Kate teaches high school kids to love literature, Grace is applying for law jobs in DC, Haley is looking to buy land, Hannah manages a bunch of men for a trucking outfit Beth is moving into her new house...is that all of them? I love these adventurous girls! And hope to see them more often this year. I guess that's my resolution for 2025: see more of my family.

Oh, and some of you asked about Little Boy.  He is healing well, thank you for asking. The surgery seemed to bother him very little.

Larry is burning the brush pile from the fallen tree today, a fire to welcome the year. Normally we would have done this last night, but it was much too wet. A bit dryer today.

Now, off I go to check on my venison stew, and make my knee bend. Have a good day, everyone!

  1. Good for you two! We only made it to 9:00 or so. But I think our bodies are still on Mountain time and screwed up.

  5. I didn't watch the ball drop at midnight, but we did a Noon Year's eve program at the library for kids. I did participate in those festivities which were a lot of fun.

  6. You still take New Year somewhat seriously. I think that's a good thing although we no longer do it. I still could if required, but Sue is always drained by about 9, no matter the occasion.

  7. We made it until midnight...just! I will send you an e-mail tomorrow. I've been meaning to do that. Glad poor dog is doing better. It always seemed to me that the cone of shame was harder on them than the actual surgery!

  8. I went to bed as usual :-) New Year is just another day in life...sorry about the doctor visit...if the conventional docs couldn't help, maybe try some other healing practices.

  10. Those monkey skeletons are a hoot! I wouldn't be able to resist either! We had a quiet NYEve. We hadn't planned to stay up but the main dish we were prepping for NYDay dinner had to be in the oven three hours, and that took us close enough to the ball drop to keep going, accompanied by some Prosecco and some snacks. Now onward. I hope you can get some relief with your knee. Might another opinion be useful? Meanwhile, Happy New Year!

  11. We had a wet, gray day, but lots of lovely food. Best wishes for a fine 25 to you and yours.

  12. Portion sizes in some restaurants are really getting ridiculous. We don’t eat out often, but when we do we almost always share a dish.
