Looking Back

10°f, or -12C, fine snow falling all morning. It is not expected to warm up much today.

This winter has been one for the books for many places, hasn't it? We have certainly had more snowy days than we have had in years. Most of it has been small snowfalls, not amounting to much depth---unlike those of you in Ontario! I have seen some incredible photos of homes and vehicles literally buried in drifts. Life must just be all about getting through the days in that situation.

I wondered how our weather at this time compared to past years, so I took a quick look through my blog to see what was going on around this same date. I found that last year, we had pretty similar weather, as I had noted a temperature of 19°f.

In 2023, it looked a lot different! And was a good bit warmer, in the 40s most days.

In 2022, I didn't have a photo, but noted that it was 28° and spitting snow.

And in 2021:

I started tracking the daily temperature in 2021, so can't compare from dates before that. But 10 years ago, I took this photo on February 20th:

Brrrr! -12°C, or about 10°f. Again, not too different than today. I had to laugh this morning when a friend in Florida posted that she was planting tomatoes today. I think it will be a while before we even consider such things. Perhaps in a month I might plant lettuce and radishes,  though. And there have been years where I have planted peas in February.

For today, just staying warm will be the main activity!

  1. As I already posted, far too much snow over the past 4 days. My deck is loaded so I tried shovelling it off, but I managed to fall over and had to crawl back to the house.... no more shovelling for me!

    1. I hope you were not hurt? I have been a turtle this winter, afraid to poke my head out much because of this new knee. Frustrating. I imagine a lot of people up North are worried about various structures that could collapse.

  2. Ontario has had quite the winter. You've seen the snow, but it has also been cold. Last year these wasn't as much snow, for sure, and memory also tells me that it wasn't as cold, but I can't be sure about that.

  5. Looking back at weather in past years shows that there have been many years with extreme temps and amounts of snow. I think winter 2025 might very well set some new records.
    Stay safe.

  6. Oh my gosh, I am so weary of winter. It got all the way up to 18 degrees today. I was tempted to wear shorts.

    1. Yes, your area really gets the cold, Debby. Nicer in summer, but this winter...not so much?

  7. Snow has been a challenge this year, without a doubt. My shovelling muscles have had a real workout!

  8. I don´t know what it is this winter! We had far colder ones yet this one seems to last forever. I´m so tired of being cold. Everything is cold here...
We had such a thermometer one time we were in Perth - so practical!

    1. Maybe it's just because your winter has been so unsettled, Iris? The weather sure doesn't help with that.

  9. We've definitely had a harder winter this year, but it seems more normal that the warmer winters we've had recently.

    1. Yes. I prefer a real winter myself, although I know that Canada has been really walloped.

    1. It has been a good idea to start tracking it a bit on my blog, Jim, just for my own curiosity!

  11. Thanks for this look-back. I keep thinking that it was so much warmer and less snowy in years past, but I guess I was mistaken overall.

But I am SO, SO sick of this snow and cold. And the inside of my house!

    1. You know, i thought the same thing, Nance, so I was surprised when I looked at old blogs to see that actually February is usually quite cold and snowy. For some reason I thought it was often much warmer!

  12. Not much snow, though a lot was forecast and two days of school closings. No real dangers apparent, though high will be in the 20s F today. Last year almost no snow and warmer most of the time, though that's based on a very old person's memory!

    1. NC has had enough weather drama to last them for years, Barb, so maybe it's just as well the snow bypassed your area.

  13. That is a fun record of the differences in weather. I am jealous about the daffs, however. We will not see ours until April, at the earliest.

  14. Thanks for recognizing Ontario's crazy winter snowfall. Last year was definitely warmer and with less snow, but this year has been a record-setter! Five feet across our front yard!
