75°f/24°C at 7am, hazy, some clouds. Too hot too early in the day, not a good sign. A small storm yesterday, rain possible today. Very humid.
We had an auction pickup yesterday, no really great finds except for this unassuming little glass snowman by Blenko, which seems to be worth about $125-150. A good $16 investment.
That, a small chest of drawers, some nice baskets (including a couple Longaberger, which are popular here in the US), a Fenton vase, etc., made up a pretty nice haul.
And since we were passing by, we stopped at the Lafayette Hotel for lunch in their lovely bar and grille. It is such a classic place, with a gorgeous bar and view of the river.
Such beautiful woodwork.
We had our favorite, fish and chips. Not as good as in England, but pretty darn good anyway. The best we have found in our area.
We once stayed overnight at the Lafayette. All the rooms are furnished in antique furniture, and our room overlooked the river. I hope we stay there again, as Marietta is such a vibrant, interesting town to visit. I used to be storyteller each year for the Inland Waterways Festival at the Ohio River Museum, and also performed a few times at Campus Martius Museum. Then there's the mortuary museum, a private museum owned by the owner of Cawley & Peoples Mortuary. Add in amazing old houses, sternwheeler cruises, lots of quirky shops and small restaurants, frequent festivals, walking paths, a Native American prehistoric mound, and other historic sites, well, you can see why we like this town. We used to have booths at the antique mall there, but when gas was $4 a gallon and sales declined, we closed it up and moved to our Ripley booth, which actually has much better sales.
Today I will be sorting and pricing, inside work on another hot day. Tomorrow should be our hottest day, then gradually cooling down a bit. We can hope!
(A close-up of the monument in the above photo. Blogger stuck it down here for some reason.)
I take it this is not Marie's, GA. May-retta I was told when I lived in GA. I like the snowman, I'd be tempted to keep it for myself! The hotel bar is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a fine eatery in an interesting town. Stay cool, eh?
ReplyDeleteWe stayed across the river from Marietta one trip we took that way. It also was a riverboat hotel. What I remember of Marietta is the Indian Mounds.
ReplyDeleteI have only in the last few years discovered the charms of Marietta. I always enjoy my visits there.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great old bar with such beautiful craftsmanship all around you. I'd love a good fish n chips.
