Thank Goodness for Sons

45°f/7.2°C, partly cloudy.

On the way home from my son's house.

It was a rough couple of days there, and then my oldest son George called. He was coming for the weekend to play in a golf tournament with Derek, son #3. That certainly brightened me up!

Then son Aaron's (#4) wife called.  She was absolutely thrilled to tell me she had been selected for the Above and Beyond Award given to an outstanding educator, and sponsored by the WV Treasurer's Office and West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
I had submitted her name and accomplishments back in the winter, because Jaime is such an inspired and involved teacher,  I really felt she was an ideal candidate for the award. She teaches high school science, started a beekeeping club, raised money for a bee yard, coaches both boys and girls cross-country track, sponsors the school's Rotarian club, and on and on. Still, I was so happy to hear she had won for the month of September, and it sure made her day too.

Then Aaron called to tell me all about his trip to Argentina, where he had been for the past 2 weeks. Fascinating! Aaron, you may remember is our family "McGyver", and travels for and wide working at places as diverse as a GM plant, NASA, that subway tunnel in Canada, a bay in Florida that is home to manatees (and must be kept heated in winter), etc. He loves what he does, and I love hearing about it.

We had a great visit with George on Saturday, and he helped Larry put together the rest of the new chicken coop before we all went out for dinner with Derek. Today the boys (well, they're 53 and 56!) went golfing, then we all got together for a cookout at Derek's. Incredibly good chicken, steak,  grilled bread, potato salad, shrimp, and the most creative cabbage I have ever eaten. Basically, you core the cabbage, fill the cavity with melted butter, bacon bits, diced onion, and spices, then wrap with foil and bake for about 2 hours. Yum. Yum.

So it has been a really nice weekend, and I feel much better---still sad about our dog Little Boy, but in a much better state of mind.

Yes, thank goodness for sons.
