Poem and Photo for December

I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.

We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.

- Oliver Herford, I Heard a Bird Sing

The photo is from last winter at my house--although we've had a little snow, I have no new bird photos yet. A bird singing as I left this morning called this poem to mind.

  1. Hey Sue,
Mom gave me a little poetry book about birds once and that poem was in it. Since winter was/is always a difficult season for us to get through that mention of Spring is always nice to remember!

  2. Theresa, this has been one of my favorites too; we all need the hopefulness of this little piece.

A book of bird poems? What a neat idea.

  5. Great poem. My granny always used to say that every day of winter that we get through, we are that much closer to spring. This poem reminds me of her. I miss my Granny.

  6. Your granny knew, didn't she Matthew? I can imagine how you miss her.

Poems like this, with so few words, can carry more meaning than a longer, wordier piece. I'm going to print this one and hang over my desk as a reminder that spring is coming.

Of course, the seed catalogs are arriving too. That also makes springtime seem closer!

  7. Simply beautiful! As a photographer, I love to capture the reflective red from the cardinal birds on the gleaming snow. It's such beauty on the coldest days of winter.

    Wonderful post Granny Sue!

  8. Here in east central Oklahoma our snows a few and far between. But out here on the farm, the bare trees look like they have been decorated for the holidays with dozens of cardinals, blue jays, blue birds and goldfinches. I should write my own poem about on that theme.

Carol, your description of the birds in winter at your house is intriguing. Definitely write that poem.
