And While I was Storytelling...

Larry was busy with projects of his own. Sometimes, of course, he travels with me. Other times, he stays here because he has his own irons in the fire.

One of his projects is a stone wall. Once I had a low stone edge around my favorite small vegetable garden but over time the stones fell. I restacked them almost every year for a while but finally gave up on it. Larry has been looking at dry-laid walls during our journeys and decided he'd give it a try. He's coming along with it pretty well.

Beyond that, he's been getting in firewood. We don't burn wood for heat anymore since we hooked up the free gas a couple years ago, but we still light the fireplace almost every night in winter, just because we enjoy it. There is nothing quite as relaxing as sitting in front of a stone fireplace in a log room as the night closes in.

Another ongoing project is the new log room. I'll post some pics soon of the progress we've made. It's not as much as we'd hoped for at this point, but it's coming along. I have to keep reminding myself that this is the 5-year plan, and we're at year 2.5 or maybe it's 3, but I guess we're still on target. In the past two months Larry finished wiring the room and also closed in the eaves and insulated it. He ran gas in there today so now he'll have heat when we finishes chinking the logs on the inside. This winter we hope to get the chinking done, and the ceiling and floor put in. In the spring we plan to get the porch built, and then install the bathroom over the summer. Then it should be complete.

Like most of you, we've been busy with outside work too. We transplanted a few mulberry and cherry trees that came up in my flower beds, and began moving the blackberries to a better location. Come spring I'll be moving a lot of seedling asparagus. Who knew they would seed themselves all over my flower gardens? I don't mind except that some of them are in places where they will fall over into the walkways. I've never tried to transplant them before so if you have any hints, please let me know.

Next week I will be home most of the week, and I have a to-do list a mile long! So many things I've had to let go while storytelling and gardening and booths and travel took priority. Now it's time for the more mundane things, and I am looking forward to it. Cleaning out closets and cleaning in general to get ready for the holidays are on top of my list. What's topping your priorities these days?

  1. You are both very busy persons. The stone wall is quite a project as well as the log house. Hard to believe how fast time passes. I always laugh when folks ask what I am doing with myself since I am retired! -- barbara
