Thankful

60 and clear, light wind. 

Goodness, it's been a long time since I posted here.

The weather has been Beautiful, and I mean that with a capital B. Clear, no humidity, nights in the 50's and low 60's, days in the 70's and low 80's...what's not to like. I am so thankful for this cooldown.

As usual I've been busy canning, canning, canning. Cider, pasta sauce, pickled jalapenos, and so on. The garden is winding down finally, and I can come up for air. We had to do a big cleanout in the cellar to get enough quart jars to finish up, but I think we have enough now. It's good to get in there every year and get rid of things that are too old, have suspicious seals or that have turned color. We are really well stocked, and once again I am grateful for all this goodness.

Our oldest son and his wife are in for a visit, and we've had a great time. They haven't been here since the pandemic began, although my son was here alone for hunting season and apple-butter-making last Fall. So it's been good to catch up--and of course I've been cooking up a storm. Tomatoes stuffed with tuna salad and apple pie a la mode when they arrived, scrambled eggs with ham and cheese, toast, tomatoes, and sliced fresh peaches which they'd brought with them for breakfast yesterday, ham, cheese, lettuce and tomato sandwiches for lunch, spaghetti, baked cheesy squash, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, green beans, and sourdough bread for dinner, with brownies or pie and ice cream for dessert. This morning, fried eggs, sausage, toast, tomatoes--again, cantaloupe and grapes, and grape juice for breakfast. We're all stuffed, but in a good way.

I had 4 or 5 painting projects in progress last week, so I was a busy woman getting them all finished and out to the booth before my son's arrive--elsewise I don't know if we could have maneuvered through the house. One is still here, a pretty dressing table that will go to Marietta this week. I also dove into house-cleaning; there's nothing like company to get the house in shape, is there? Things can get out of hand when I have so much going on, so it was good to get the house back in order. 

This week I'll have more canning to do, but the bulk of it is out of the way. I am so pleased with our gardens this year. They've produced beyond expectations, which I credit to Larry's diligence and hard work. We will eat well all winter, without a doubt.

  1. Great job on having a wonderful producing garden this year. I am amazed how fast this year is flying by. Sounds like canning is keeping you busy but come winter you'll be able to smile at all the hard work you two did.
