49, rainy, after a beautiful day yesterday with highs in the 50s. More rain on the way but won't be too cold.
Well, happy Thanksgiving, a few days late! We had a wonderful day with our son Derek and his daughters and their families. The venison I prepared instead of turkey was really superb, probably the best I have ever made. I cut tenderloin into butterfly steaks, browned it and put that in a roaster while I made the mushrooms rosemary gravy, which I then poured over the meat and stuck the pan, lid on, in the oven for a couple hours. The meat was fork tender and so delicious. With it we had mashed potatoes, green beans, carrots cooked with maple syrup and butter, hot rolls,, and that cheddar-squash casserole that everyone loves. Appetizers were credited with dip, pickles and a cheese tray.
And dessert, of course, was pie--apple, cherry, or pumpkin. A younger neighbor said she makes chocolate, graham cracker, and some other kind of pie, but no fruit or pumpkin. I rarely if ever make a pie that doesn't contain fruit; maybe it's a generational difference?
Oh, and cider, wine, and later eggnog for drinks. Twas a great meal altogether.
We so enjoyed our two youngest great grandchildren, Ellie and Ryland. Such fun to have little ones in the house again, toys scattered, everyone herding the baby, who started walking at 9 months and is one active little girl! It reminded me of the days when the grands were little, all them running around, the house a disaster but easily cleaned up when silence descended again in their wake. What days those were. I don't think I appreciated them enough at the time but I am so grateful for those memories.
I have lots more to post in the next few days, and will have time again, I think, now that deer season and the holiday are behind us. We will be getting out the Christmas decorations this week, but no other big plans. Time to slow down a bit, maybe? Today, I will get the Christmas cards ready to mail to family and friends in England, list and pack ebay, maybe finish painting a little table, and possibly can some chili beans. Possibly. We shall see.
