Clean Out

67°f this morning, with a forecast for rain tbat delivered only a light shower.

We had hoped for a good rain, but it was not to be. Still, many places did get rain and I am happy for them.

We spent the day, for the most part anyway, cleaning out and organizing the cellar. What. A. Job. But it is done, and organized better than it has been in years.

In the next year or two, we will never have to buy:
  • Jams or jellies
  • Salsa
  • Beef or chicken broth
  • Canned fruit
  • Fruit pie filling, including mincemeat
  • Canned pears or peaches
  • Whole or diced tomatoes
  • Tomato juice, apple cider, or grape juice
  • Pancake syrup
  • Pasta sauce
  • Canned green beans or corn
  • Pickles of any kind
  • Mushrooms
  • Mustard
  • Relish
  • Any kind of fruit juice, or tomato juice
  • Canned soups
  • Canned beans (pinto,  kidney, etc)
  • Applesauce
  • Relish of any kind
  • Canned or ready-cooked poultry, or beef ( we have venison,  much better)
  • Sauerkraut
  • Cranberry sauce
...and I have probably missed a few things. It was a lot of work, but it was a nice, cool day to do it.

  1. A good store. It may sound a lot, but gradually built up and maintained it isn't as big a deal as some make out.

    1. We have a cleanout once a year, gz. Necessary to keep it in order, and to remove outdated, etc.

  5. Wow, I'm impressed but I understand all too well how much work it took to amass that much food.

    1. I am sure you do, coming from here. I can pretty much year round, so as you say, it gradually builds up. We remove pretty much anything over 3 years old.

  6. And what a good feeling that is - a full larder, the fruit of your own work.

  7. Nice! What an accomplishment. You make your own pancake syrup?

    1. Yes, I make cherry pit syrup, and other berry syrups to use in place of traditional maple syrup.

  8. Wow, that is awesome. The only thing we would not have to buy is fish!
