Was That the Weekend?

35°f, about 2°C this morning, warming to 57°f, clear and sunny.

A very early iris, iris reticulata,  aka Snow Iris, blooming in my flowerbed today. Still no daffodils, but soon!

We are finishing up painting the bedroom today, and will I ever be glad. Just one room, but it seems like the whole house is in turmoil, as Mary G noted of her last painting project.  We have sure cleaned out lots of dust! That heavy furniture doesn't get moved very often, and it shows.

That's about all we have been doing this weekend. I did cook the two of the trout Jeff gave us last week, for dinner yesterday, just pan-frying it. I made hush puppies and a salad, and that was dinner. Breakfast today was a kind of huevos ranchero, I suppose--- I heated some salsa and poached the eggs in it, then served on toasted English muffins, putting a piece of white cheddar cheese on the muffin half, then the eggs, some of the salsa, and sprinkled with chopped parsley. Yummy. Making dinner now--catfish fingers, baked potatoes, and green beans. Simple fare, because I am too tired to do much else.

The dogs are in the doghouse with us, because Little Boy popped open the sliding door last night (we forgot to secure it) and he and Buddy got skunked. It's bad enough to get up and find the door wide open when it's 35° outside, but two stinky dogs too? It was not a good night. Trying to get back to sleep with that reek in the air was almost impossible, so we were both bleary-eyed this morning to welcome in Daily Savings Time. We had to laugh about the poor dogs, who don't understand why they can't come inside, but I do feel sorry for them. They have been getting a steady stream of treats to make them feel better about the situation.

And that, friends, was our weekend. No "weekend whirl" here!

  1. Ugh. Skunks. They never learn do they? It seems like one go around with them would put them off for life. Not so.

    1. I swear Little Boy thinks skunks are a relative, he likes them so much! He seems to be the instigator, and Buddy gets caught in the spray.

  2. Those poor dogs all stinky and relegated to the outside. How long will they smell? We once lived in an old old house with an earth floor cellar. A skunk somehow got in but there was no way to get it out. Not sure if DH's idea of shooting him was a good one. We had to move out for a while.
Wasn't me that was doing any painting. I think it was Mary G.

    1. Oops, sorry! You are right. Will edit to correct.
My son shot a skunk in his garage, same advice...don't do that! Had to laugh at your story, GM.

  3. Have never noticed Snow Iris over here...so beautiful. Where did you get then energy to paint the house yourself? Gosh..we have been wanting to hire people to do it, but the thought of having strangers in our place and cats hiding...we just keep procrastinating it..

    1. Angie, we have always painted the house ourselves, so it never occurred to me to hire it out. We do it in stages, one wall at a time, or half of the room, so it's not overwhelming. I don't know if we will be able to do it again, though. Getting kinda old for ladders! We have two more rooms to do. One later this month, I hope, the other...that is going to be a real job.

  4. Wow on your cooking! I´d really like to try your huevos ranchero. And hush puppies I only read about.
Sorry about your dogs, ewww. We have the daylight saving time-fun still to come.

    1. We have not adjusted yet, still running on the old time! But tomorrow we have to be 2 hours away by 11am. So we will have to get up and get going.

  5. I have never seen a snow iris before. What a wonderful treat after a long winter. So sorry for you and the dogs that they got skunked. It takes a long time to get rid of the smell.

    1. We have a special shampoo we will try Wednesday, when it is supposed to be 75. It helped last time. The smell has dissipated a good bit, but not enough to let them inside!

  6. A lot goes on there: painting, skunks, flowers, cooking. We live a much quieter life.

    1. We seem to have enough time for rest, AC. Mornings are kind of slow...breakfast, do the word puzzles, email, Facebook, start laundry, stuff like that. Afternoons we are busy, then around 5 or 6 we stop for the day. But that changes as the weather warms up, of course.

  8. It so nice to see any signs of Spring, so thanks for that! Sounds awful about the poor stinky dogs! Hope the smell goes away soon.

  9. My eyes are watering after your skunk tale. I saw a skunk here as recently as last Autumn, but haven't had an "incident" in years. Touch wood!

  10. Not a great way to get up in the morning with the smell of skunk. I wonder if they knew there might be treats involved because the human feels guilty keeping them outside. :)

  11. Once the mess is gone, however, you can enjoy the clean, new paint job.
Our daughter's long-haired doodle got skunked while we were on holiday a few years back. We used a whole bottle of shampoo and were glad we were camped on the Ottawa River for rinsing.
My brother-in-law swore by mechanic's hand cleaner. He rubbed it into the dogs' coats (he lived where there were many skunks) and said it took out the scent better than any other method.

  12. Sounds like quite a "whirl" to me. But we're older and I keep relying on that as an excuse!

  13. I've never had a dog get skunked oh I hope I never do! Occasionally I get a whiff on the wind & keep the dogs close but I'm sure they come around the house at night.

I'm amazed at all you get accomplished! I need to paint my four exterior doors. we moved in last May & waited because it was so hot. Then it didn't get done & I waited because it was too cold. Now I'm waiting for warm weather again but the flies are already so bad. I know the doors will be wide open as I paint them so...oh well. I'm hoping this month to get it done.

And I'm getting anxious to get back into the garden. I haven't been able to garden for two yrs now. I hope to do some this year.

  14. I think you eat very well at your house! (Says the woman with a lean cuisine mini-pizza in her oven right now.) I hear you on the daffs. I always hate to pick mine too -- and I really want to! Of course, I have yet to see a sign. But I did note some shoots on what I call my dwarf iris but I think might be what you have. That's a very good sign!

  15. Not much worse than a skunky dog. I painted our bedroom about a month ago and while I am so glad I did it, the process was such a mess. We have simple fair around here for supper, often. It's the best!
