I planted most of these irises 2 1/2 years ago, and finally am getting to see them bloom. I couldn't even remember what colors I planted, so it's a sweet surprise each time one opens.
I dug a piece of this rose at the site of an old garden on a farm where my brother lived in Northern Virginia. The farm was named Chudleigh, so I have always called this the Chudleigh Rose. I stumbled it in this spot 40 years ago, intending to move it, and there it stayed. It is very fragrant, and blooms mostly in May and June, with occasional later blooms.
About 45 years ago, I planted 5 rose bushes along the walk to the front door, mainly to stop my boys cutting across the lawn and making a bare path. It worked! But the roses began to die off about 10 years ago and I have been nursing them back to health. All but the yellow one survived and are thriving now. Whew.
I was surprised to see this red one; I was sure it too had died.
The newer hybrid roses and the ramblers have yet to bloom, so there is that to look forward to.
I am afraid I may bore you with flower pictures, so please forgive me. I think I have an addiction to blooms!

The saying goes something like, they sleep in the first year, creep in the second year, and gallop in the third year. Your irises seem to be doing that.

DeleteNever bored with flower photos! I was peering closely at them trying to determine from the leaves if some were rugosa varieties. When we left Vermont in 1998 I regretfully left behind a cherished collection of roses.
