30°f/-1C, snow flurries. Cold and mostly cloudy all day, but the stiff of snow soon melted.
We hadn't planned to go out today, but our son messaged that a friend of his had a lot of Depression glass left behind by his ex-wife a while back that he wanted to get rid of. So off we went!
Along the way to his house: old schoolhouse, or old church?
There were boxes and boxes of glass, but it was almost all clear glass which does not sell well these days. So I have a big sorting job to do tomorrow. Some will go on ebay, a little to the booths, the rest to the thrift.
Before we left though, I made a batch of snickerdoodle cookies because what guy doesn't like snickerdoodles? It was a small gift for so much glass, but he was thrilled. Derek was happy to get a dozen too! I use the Betty Crocker recipe, which is in my old cookbook, but here is a link to the same recipe online. So simple, and so good!
Since we were out we stopped at our favorite café and caught up with several good friends there. How nice it is when you know almost every single person in a place! Lots of conversation, and a shock to find that one man that we had not seen in a while had had a major heart attack and open heart surgery back in October. Somehow that news missed us, but he is doing well and has certainly made some adjustments to his too-busy life.
I was saddened by news that came via email that another friend had lost her husband to pancreatic cancer. What heartbreak for her. I planned to call her when we got home, but was surprised to run into her at the grocery store with her son. It was a teary meeting, and I did not hurry; we talked a long while right there in the store. Forty-seven years of marriage; my heart breaks for her.
On the way home I snapped a couple quick photos of paintings on two empty storefronts by a local art student. I had to do some editing and couldn't quite crop out the van's mirror, but I think you can still appreciate her work.

Oh, cancer. We ... "we" put money into going to Mars instead of doing research on the important things. I am sorry you lost a friend. Both my parents... cancer.
ReplyDeleteOn a lighter note: Nice art! Have a good Saturday.
That is nice work on the windows.
ReplyDeleteOh wonderful art murals on the windows! So sorry to hear of your friend's loss. Yes yes to snickerdoodles. What a great name for a cookie. I wonder if I thought up another cool name would someone invent a cookie to go with it...or do you need cool cookies first!
ReplyDeleteLooks more like a church to me. I just threw away some glasses that I haven't used for more than 10 years...
ReplyDeleteThose painted windows are lovely!
ReplyDeleteThe local artist did a nice job decorating the windows. Enjoy the weekend.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a good trip, even if not all the glass will be saleable. And the snickerdoodles were a great idea. I'm so sorry about Theresa's husband. That's really tough, especially at this time of year.
ReplyDeleteYou had quite a day! I have rose colored depression glass from my grandma. She called it rose glass.
ReplyDeleteWe're finding more and more that people our age are facing serious illness. Who said retirement was a 'golden age'?
ReplyDelete...Susanna, yopu are right, what guy doesn't like snickerdoodles?
ReplyDeleteSnicker doodles were a good trade!
ReplyDeleteI've never had a Snickerdoodle cookie so maybe I will check out the recipe.
