Back to Glenville:
The old country store is one cool place for an antiques nut like me.
Larry and I also found our way up the steep street to the old bank building for a photo shoot that will apparently make us look like old west Bank robbers or something. Can't wait to see that!
In the bank, such intricate ironwork, and look at that oak counter.
After the photo session we went to see the quilt show. Wow!
Then I went to the singalong sessions while Larry rambled around outside before heading to the van for a nap. It was so much fun to sing again! The first session was gospel songs. Now, I don't really know any gospel songs, having been raised Catholic, but it was easy enough to pick up the words. I couldn't read the lyrics eitger, because our leader, Ginny Hawker, forgot her readers, so I lent her mine. I learned that I am quite a good lip reader. Might come in handy when my hearing starts to go.
After the gospel songs, the next session was general, old-timey songs, and I was the only woman there for quite a while. It was a relaxed session, with different guys sharing a song. I sang an old ballad, Little Omie Wise, one I hadn't sung in years. Funny how it can come back like that.
The last session was similar but many more people came in. They had all been at the fiddle and banjo contests, I think. Val Mindel led this singing, and it was just wonderful, with lots of songs I had never heard before as well as a few old favorites. So many good singers there! Afterward, Val complimented my voice, which made me happy because I really wondered if I had lost my singing ability.
I finally left, regretfully, since I knew Larry was probably getting anxious to go home. Had I been there alone, i would probably have been rolling in at midnight after watching the square dances, the evening concert, and then hanging around the jam sessions. Ah me. What do you do when one wants to go and one wants to stay? I wish I had someone else to go with, honestly, because Larry usually wants to leave long before I do, and we miss so much. On the other hand, I really enjoy doing things with him, and would feel guilty if he wasn't there. A conundrum. Do you have this problem with your mate?
We missed a lot actually, since the festival started Thursday night: a trivia contest, shape note singing, a spelling bee, the lumberjack and muzzleloader events, the whole hands-on crafts area, the Civil War encampment and related activities, and so much more. Next year we will be sure to get a room so we can enjoy more of what's offered. And I can stay up late and Larry can go to bed!
Today, Sunday the 21st, is my 7/th birthday, and Father's Day. This morning I asked Larry, since it was a special day for each of us, who was going to get up and make the morning tea and coffee? We both did, actually! It has been a busy day, no visits from my sons as they have the annual kayak trip with their Dad every Father's Day, but I heard from them and from many of our grandchildren. So nice. I spent thr day catching up housework, and sanding two big pieces of furniture. Yuck, but had to be done. Larry mowed and picked the peas, which i shelled and froze.
I guess it was an odd way to spend what should have been a special day, but then we had lunch at that nice place on the river on Friday, and yesterday just enjoying ourselves, so we did our celebrating early. Worked for us!

Your day at the festival looked absolutely wonderful.
ReplyDeleteIt was a complete pleasure, start to finish.
DeleteDizem e é verdade: Viver é a vida, aproveita a vida!
ReplyDeleteUm abraço de segunda-feira, Andreja!
True words, Andrea!
DeleteThat looks like a good festival... and along with your birthday a good relaxed time. The best way to celebrate
ReplyDeleteIt was, gz. Just a good weekend.
DeleteHappy birthday!
ReplyDeleteYou had such an enjoyable time exploring antiques. Everything looked so beautifully organised and displayed. The quilts are amazing and represent so many hours of painstaking work.
I think your plan to stay overnight in future will be a good one, accommodating everyone's wishes.
Yes, I will do that next year. He never does the planning, of course! Always up to me to do all the plans for where we go.
DeleteHihi, yes saw the little, sweet face!
ReplyDeleteSo sad quilts are not common here.
Years ago we had great Godpel concerts here. Those days are gone, too.
I often go by myself. Is that selfish or is it caring I have no clue. Especially festivals I do on my own. Stop where and as long as I want to.
Happy belated Birthday!!
Same here - we celebrate when we feel like it, not for birthdays or such. A kiss is enough :-)
Maybe I need to get used to going alone...but then he makes me feel guilty, lol, little comments like "I haven't been anywhere", etc.
DeleteWhat an awesome place to visit. I love all those quilts and how they displayed them.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you both had a good special day even if you didn't do anything out of the ordinary. Sometimes just going with the flow is the best way to spend a day
Yes, and I felt well celebrated the days before.
Delete...Saturday we went to a benefit auction and it was sad to see that quilts don't bring the money that they once did!
ReplyDeleteThey still bring good prices here, Tom. Lots of quilters!
DeleteHappy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna have to make it to the folk festival sometime. All of those activities are right up my alley.
You would love it, anfmd your husband would probably enjoy it too. The car show was something Larry liked, as well as the encampment.
DeleteI saw the face! I think getting a room next year is a good idea. Then he can be with you until he's had enough and you can stay. Perfect! Happy Birthday!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! What a fun day you had at the festival! So much to see in that country store and those quilts!! - so many pieces to sew together. Really amazing and beautiful work.
ReplyDeleteThis festival is beyond fabulous. I love that country store -- so many fun things there. And then that quilt show! I can see why it was hard to tear yourself away. Sometimes Rick and I do the same, sometimes I go on my own and (usually) he's on his bike! We're pretty good at that and we both get what we want. I always used to love the sing-alongs at our folk fest too!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday. I guess it was intentionally that you used a slash for the ones place. :). My daughter is the quilter and she does a lot of hand quilting too. She often takes home first prize at the annual Fair in town.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a whole lot of fun. I would have been with you until way after midnight. What a great festival!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday ( a day late). Nice that you had a fun weekend.
ReplyDeleteWe have the same problem with staying vs leaving any get together except here it's my DH that wants to stay and me who wants to leave.
Happy Birthday! The festival sounds like a lot of fun. I love these kinds of events.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy 'special days' when they aren't rigidly dictated by the calendar--no great expectations, just enjoying without pressure.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to try shape-note singing. Sadly my rather good singing voice began to disappear in my early 70's and I now sound like a crow!
That bank is a work of art! Your festival looks like great fun.
