Suzette Bradshaw led an interesting and fun writing workshop that produced some surprisingly good work. We cut words from magazines and arranged them on paper to make poems. Prizes were awarded too—cans of Vienna sausages and pork and beans! It was relaxing and we laughed a lot, and some of the poems created were real keepers.
One of the highlights for me (and there were many) were the evening sessions in Kay and Evelyn’s motel room. These instructors made themselves available to students and anyone else who wanted to join them. We sang, told stories, discussed music, and got to know each other in a way that would not have happened in a more formal setting. That end of the motel was dubbed “Estrogen Alley” because so many women of like age were in those rooms.
I stopped at The Rock House, a stone and log cabin in Marlinton, to browse the antiques, books and music collections. I ended up with a CD of the Hammons Family music and a signed copy of Kirk Judd's poetry book
Field of Vision.
