Book Review: We Be Warm Till Springtime Comes

We Be Warm Till Springtime Comes
by Lillie D. Chaffin, illustrated by Lloyd Bloom. MacMillan Publishing Co, NY: 1980

Appalachian literature for children

If I had to pick a favorite children's book, this would be the one I'd name. Black and white illustrations are perfect for the story of Jimmy Jack Blackburn, a young boy who braves winter and uncertainty to try to help his family. The story is powerful--told in Jimmy Jack's voice, simply and clearly describing his fight against bitter cold.

Although out of print, the book is available through many online bookstores. It's a great read-aloud, gripping children in the plight of Jimmy Jack and his family. And when the coal bank falls---well, you'll have to read it yourself to find out what happens.
