Fruit or Vegetable?

Can you guess what this is?

Hint: it grows in my garden.

  1. Hmmm. I have no idea, but if I were taking a wild guess, I'd say young gourds or pumpkins.

  2. Good try, but not quite it. It is edible, in fact considered a gourmet item by some.

You're on the right track, though. It does grow on a vine.

  3. If I'm not mistaken they are lemon cucumbers because they look just like the ones I have growing in my garden.

  4. Let's see, they are crisp, juicy, have a wonderful taste and, by golly, I believe they were in the salad I just ate... There are severall fifferent varieties of this paticular item. 'Course, I like 'em all. Not as much as eggplant, mind you. But still....

  5. Earthheart, you're right--lemon cucumbers! They are mildly flavored and the skins are so tender that even the pickiest person won't complain if you don't peel them. Prolific too, at least in my garden. They will set tons of fruit in a season.

Aaron, you said there were many varieties--were you referring to lemon cucumbers of cucumbers in general?

  6. Yay I'm right! Hard not to be when I just brought in a bunch from the garden. (grin) Interesting what you said about the tender skins. Mine seem to have a crisper, somewhat tougher skin than other cukes. Maybe just a soil difference or something?
Still good and I agree, they do seem prolific. Cute little things!

  8. Yes, they make great pickles. I even found a recipe especially for them, Deloutre. I have not tried it though.

  9. Just cucumbers in general. There are several different varieties of slicing cucumbers, not to mention pickling cucumbers and the exotics like the lemon cucumber. Did I mention I like eggplant?
