Poem for Today: A Worthy Effort

A worthy poem
Does not alight easily
In a blank journal

Scattered on paper
Like leaves on new fallen snow
Thought becomes poem

Poem becomes thought
Captured in rhyme and short verse
In specific form

Form becomes poem
Freed from capture to fly
From journal pages

  1. I like the image of the words flying from the journal pages -- just like they take our thoughts.

I so could *not* do this challenge!

  2. How beautiful! I love that this is composed of haiku. May I share this with my students (who, by the way, I have encouraged to participate in NaPoWriMo)?

  3. Today was the day,
    the decision was made.
    After long hulabaloo,
    the foundation was laid.
    Ebay be damned,
    too many bids to count,
    to find myself
    a worthy mount.
    The race is near,
    the matter to settle.
    Yet I have,
    nothing to pedal.
    I searched I looked
    for something free
    alas I found
    it was not to be.
    New or Used,
    that old drag.
    But New comes with
    a lofty price tag.
    Craigslist was searched
    yet I was glum
    for those, too, were built
    with unobtainium.
    Time was short
    to late to be thrifty.
    Damned thing cost me
    around four fifty.
    Whats done is done,
    that's sure the case
    but she might kill me
if I don't get First Place.

  4. Lainie, you absolutely may share it with your students. Thank you for asking!

I was trying to capture the idea of poems as words captured as they float in our minds, Susan. I don't know if I succeeded. I'm glad you liked that image.

  5. Aaron, I love it!! A poet in hiding, I see. You know, people who buy those good bikes don't usually part with them--if you're willing to put that kind of money in it, you're serious. I hope you get all the enjoyment possible from your bike. I have a feeling Jaime will have one next, and the kids. There are too many great bike trails in this state for you not to do some family trips.

    Congratulations on your new ride!

  6. What a great poem. You had me thinking about form and how I write poetry and how my thoughts become words. That's deep!
