Down by the Riverside

I took these photos last week and have not had a chance to post them. We were at the state capitol building for a concert at the culture center, both of which are located near the banks of the Great Kanawha River in Charleston, WV. The night was beautiful, the building glowed and there were two sternwheelers on the river.

The West Wing entrance to the capitol. This is the entrance to the governor's offices; the wide walk leads to his mansion which was just behind me as I took this photo.

The first sternwheeler cruised into view just as the last light of the day was fading on the horizon.

See the water splashing off the paddles on back of the boat?

In a few minutes, the second sternwheeler came up but I could not get a good photo of it. When I turned around there stood Lincoln, as somber as ever: the bronze sculpture called "Lincoln Walks at Midnight" captures the essence of what it must have been like to be president in the turbulent days of the Civil War.

Some evenings stay in our memory a long time. With digital cameras, we can retrieve those times in photos to savor again and again. Even if the photos aren't perfect, they make me happy and help me relive the soft breezes, clear air and the fun of walking at dusk with a friend along a beautiful river.

  1. What wonderful photos! It always amazes me how different things look at night. The riverboats were pretty neat too.

  3. That is so true Granny Sue! I really appreciate being able to take all of the pictures that I am taking in this digital era! I sometimes take well over a thousand pictures just in one month. I love it! Back in the day of film and developing I thought I took a lot of pictures but looking at my old albums I didn't take enough. We lived in the DC area for 4 years and the pictures that I didn't take haunt me to this day.

  5. It might be, laoi, although I don't think these run on steam anymore. There are some that do, I think--preserved from a past era.

  6. You know, Angela, what I am sorry about is missing the days when my boys were little. We could not afford to take many pictures because developing was so expensive--at least for our budget. Now young parents will have thousands of memories of those days. How lucky!

  7. Mama-bug and Nance, you would have loved that night. I wanted to take more but....my card was full! Note to self--carry an extra memory card.

  8. In the "old days" with the Kodak 110 or (in better days yet) the 35 mm, we took 4 or 5 pics of a special birthday or a special event, hoping to get one good one. And we paid for the 3 or 4 bad ones along with the good . . . .well, just speaking for my own photographic abilities! lol
