A chilly 35 this morning, light overcast.
Well, life certainly got busy there for a few days.
Nothing dramatic or exciting, of course--this is still Covidtime. Just the routine stuff. We did get a few seeds in the ground--lettuce, radishes, carrots, beets, spinach, kale, and onions. Just small amounts of each. I am trying to learn to plant for two people, and to succession-plant more often. We did pretty well with it last year, but still had too much of the have-to-eat-fresh things coming in all at once. So I am trying again to downsize how much I plant at one time of each vegetable.
That said, did I mention that Larry plowed up a big patch? It's about as big as both of our other gardens combined. I'm thinking about what to plant in this new ground. Potatoes? We usually grow just enough to eat as new potatoes with maybe a few to store away. But maybe this year we'll plant enough to store a goodly amount for winter. Or should the new patch be tomatoes? They love newground. So do corn.
Decisions, decisions.
My little seedlings are coming along, although I had a huge disapointment with the red lettuce and the Early Girl Tomatoes. The tomatoes never sprouted; the lettuce came up and damped off, although the container of bibb lettuce, planted exactly the same way, is doing great. Go figure. I am sad about the Early Girls, as these are our favorite early tomatoes. I guess I'll buy a few plants and let it go at that.
The only big news around here is that we got our second vaccine. The only side effects were a very small, short-lived headache, a tiny tummy ache for an hour or so which could have been caused by something else, a sore arm, and tiredness. That last was really the only thing that was a bother. It was a relief to get through so well, since many friends report symptoms ranging from killer headaches, several days of being really ill like with the flu, and a few other things. The worst side effect seems to be the Bell's palsy that one friend developed after her shot, which her doctor said was probably due to a combination of stress and the shot.
The other news is a planned trip to Florida sometime in the next month. We want to visit our youngest son and now that we're fully vaccinated we feel safer making the trip. So that is something we're looking forward to.
Today I have raspberries and rhubarb to plant, along with a few bulbs. The raspberries we got from Stark brothers nursery last year were terrible--they even replaced them once, but only 2 plants sprouted from the dormant stock, and neither survived. We won't be ordering from them again. This time the plants are from Jung's Seed. We shall see how they do.
We've been trying sprouts, radishes and a mixed kind and they are doing great. We have some old jars that we placed the seeds in and in a few days we were eating sprouts. I never tried them before but love them.
ReplyDeleteI like sprouts too. I used to do them all the time in the 70s but not since. I will have to do that again. They're delicious. So crunchy.
